Ayers Rd
Title:  Ayers Rd
Description:  The east end of Ayers Rd is well known. It was the location of the famous Tioga Center semaphores, just west of the grade crossing there. The other end is not as well known, but still photo worthy. The deck was removed from the bridge around 1990, eliminating it as a platform for taking photos; it was a popular spot during EL days. We see 419 rolling underneath with 42 cars behind its four units.

Tell tale
Title:  Tell tale
Description:  One of the vestiges of the old days that was still hanging on into the modern era was this telltale. It once extended across the LV Auburn Branch to warn of the impending Ayers Rd bridge. Almost 30 years after that line became a gravel trail, the telltale remains.

Not much difference
Title:  Not much difference

Changing scene
Title:  Changing scene
Description:  This view of 419 from Lester Av in Johnson City is notable not so much for the train, but how much has changed in the area over the years. The piles of dirt beyond the train were once the Endicott Johnson Paracord plant. That area will become a Wal Mart in a few years. Progress, I suppose, but not necessarily improvement. The SD 40s powering the train, like the EJ plant, will soon become a memory.

Erie classic
Title:  Erie classic
Description:  The Erie used a variety of signals along their route. They are best remembered on the Tier by the semaphores, some of which lasted into the NS era. They also used searchlights, "traffic light" and these tri light clusters, such as this one at Hiawatha Road in Owego, which is watching CP 419 roll west with 25 cars.

Catching the sun
Title:  Catching the sun
Description:  Skies in the Southern Tier are famously cloudy, and days on end of solid overcast are not uncommon. Some days are hit and miss, wiith gaps in the clouds providing a glimpse of sun. Here train 167 catches one of the holes and a burst of sun as it approaches Devils Elbow, a section along the Susquehanna River that passes around a rock outcrop between Owego and Tioga Center.

Out of the woods
Title:  Out of the woods
Description:  The Tier runs through about 1/2 mile or so of a wooded area between MP 232 and Hiawatha Rd. 39T is coming out of that short forest behind a quintet of SDs-all of them in more or less the same paint-passing the Erie tri light automatic signal at MP 233. This was only one of a variety of signal types on the Erie, which it seemed, could not make up their minds about which to use.

Unusual sight
Title:  Unusual sight
Description:  The CP SD 40 types were far too common on the Tier, and we even had the SD40F red barns here for a while. CEFX power, on the other hand, was not, despite a group of new GEs that showed on a fairly regular basis. The other power was not all that common on CP. This 10T is an exception, with an SD 45 body unit between a pair of CPs own, seen rolling 60 cars past Miller Beach Rd.

Description:  New York is not known for its grand vistas in way that, say, New Mexico or Colorado is. But here is a place called, appropriately, Big Flats, which is pretty much what it sounds like. Title:  Scenic view from new bridge
Description:  After years of discussion, the Apalachin-Campville connector was built near exit 66 of NY 17, the Apalachin exit. It extended across the Susquehanna to reach NY 17C near Campville, allowing a view of the tracks not previously available. New red order
Title:  New red order
Description:  For a long time, CP resisted sending its fleet of GEs to the D&H, preferring instead to run out what miles the various SD 40 types still had in them. This 39T was a sight, having five of the newer units leading across the Chenango River. The red brick building to the far right is the Derby Knitting Mills, which would be burn to the ground in a spectacular fire a few years after this shot was taken.

Overhead view
Title:  Overhead view
Description:  In 2000, a bridge that had been discussed for a long time was finally built across the Susquehanna at Apalachin, connecting to NY 17C at the east end of Campville. Aside from making my trips to and from Binghamton a lot easier, it was also a good platform for shooting trains. I took a lot of photos here of westbounds, not so many eastbounds. The shot of a westbound here is a lot more dramatic, hence I tended to shoot more of them. Today, I got an eastbound, the same 11T I shot at MP 230. We see in this photo that there is an interesting mix of power. The leader is nothing special, but the second unit is one of CP's famed Red Barns, the SD40F's that floated around the system, and spent several years here. Trailing is a SOO SD 60, also fairly common, but adding a different shade of red to the mix.
