Strasburg power
Title:  Strasburg power
Description:  The power that was on the Strasburg Local that day is now back in Manassas, tied up for tomorrows activity. Note the type B trucks under the GP 35's, the result of being used from trade in Alcos. For those of you who remember when MTV used to actually run music videos, youll recall Steve Winwood had a song out in the early 80s called "Back In the High Life Again" that featured a Southern Railway train switching. This was the train, the rail sequences shot here in Manassas.

New paint for an old classic
Title:  New paint for an old classic
Description:  One of Southern's hi hood GP 30s is in the yard at Manassas, part of the consist for the Strasburg Turn. NS did not repaint a lot of the older power that was likely to be retired, so it was something of a surprise to find this. I never saw another NS painted GP 30, either SOU or NW.

Its not all coal
Title:  Its not all coal
Description:  An eastbound COFC train passes under the SCL at Petersburg. This route is most often used for coal trains to bypass downtown Petersburg due to congestion issues caused by 200 plus car coal trains, as well as having a better grade profile. There is merchandise freight as well, as this 85 car intermodal train shows.

Starting east
Title:  Starting east
Description:  An eastbound 178 car loaded coal train gets started from Crewe. This was the point where coal trains were consolidated after getting over the Blue Ridge. Some prodigious consists went east from here to tidewater, as the gradient was quite easy. I often saw trains in the 225 car range on this line.

Rolling on down to the sea
Title:  Rolling on down to the sea
Description:  A 179 car coal train rolls under the SCL at N Collier as it makes its way down to NWs Norfolk coal piers. I wonder how many tons wound up along the right of way-look at the coal blowing off the cars!! The power was typical of these trains-this one is light, trains longer than 200 cars were common-as there is little gradient to overcome. Nice to see a Southern unit leading.

Taking it to the street
Title:  Taking it to the street
Description:  One of the more interesting parts of the NS former Nickel Plate line was this stretch of 19th St in Erie, where the tracks ran down the middle. Im sure the residents made their peace with it, but I can imagine having a train in your front yard several times per day must have been a pest at times. Here we see HAN 1X taking a slow stroll through town with 30 platforms and 15 COFC. It would not be til 2002 that the locals would get some relief, when a connection was built to the CSX former NYC line on either end of the street running. That "89" at left is the milepost(from Buffalo), and not a house number.
