Hot time in the old town
Title:  Hot time in the old town
Description:  The shot is kinda nuked, but I like the effect. When the Steamtown trains ran on the ex DLW to Kinglsey, the station area came alive with a lot more activity than youd expect for the size of the town. Several hundred riders were met by a crew of volunteers who opened the station, selling refreshments and souvenirs. It was quite a party. In this shot, we see 4-6-2 2317 along with a big crowd.

Big crowd
Title:  Big crowd
Description:  Steamtown ran excursions on the ex DLW for several summers in the 1990s, and they were popular. This was due to two engines available, and the route. The DLW Cut Off toward Binghamton had the attractions of Factoryville tunnel, Martins Creek Viaduct, and the prize of Nicholson Bridge, the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world, that year marking its 75th anniversary. The crowd here on the second week of operation on the Cut Off watches as the crew goes through the paces of changing ends.

CN on Tunkhannock
Title:  CN on Tunkhannock
Description:  Steamtown occasionally had a problem with its regular steam power, so they restored CN 3254 to serve as their main engine while CP 2317 was getting an overhaul. In 1990, they made an arrangement with Walter Rich to run the ex DLW to Kingsley Pa, about 30 miles north of Scranton. The route would take the trips not only over the massive Tunkhannock Viaduct, but also over its smaller sibling, Martins Creek Viaduct, and through Factoryville Tunnel as a bonus. This is one of the first trains to run to Kingsley, the eight car train dwarfed by the massive structure.

View from town
Title:  View from town
Description:  Its hard to get a shot of a train on the Nicholson bridge from a close angle due to its height at sheer size. This look, taken from the Pump & Pantry on US 11 shows the bridge pretty well, but its hard to see the train, just starting after a short stop on the bridge to let riders take in the view of Tunkhannock Creek and surrounding areas.

Staking a claim
Title:  Staking a claim
Description:  The D&H was now the operator of the DLW line from Binghamton to Scranton. Since they were running the Steamtown trains, they wanted to make their image one the public would associate with that pleasant experience. Thus we have this D&H herald above the door to the restored DLW station at Kingsley.

Tiptoe thru the hoses
Title:  Tiptoe thru the hoses
Description:  CN 3254 rolls through Cayuga at restricted speed. A closer look at the track shows why. A pair of hoses are across track 1, and under track 2, where the 3254 is passing. At far left, the reason: a tipped over covered hopper is being relieved of its load of plastic pellets, which are being pneumatically pumped into the bulk trailer at right.

Description:  A family standing trackside at Cayuga, where the Kelser Valley Branch diverged from the DLW main exchanges waves with the crew of the Steamtown train, working hard up the grade to Clarks Summit on its way to Kingsley. The trips on the DLW cut off were popular, not only for riders, but with locals as well, many coming out to see the trains.

Title:  In full cry
Description:  Once the train got over the top at Clarks Summit, it would take off as the DLW engineering folks envisioned when they built the line in 1912. The trees have cut down the view some, but we still have a good looking train rolling north at Hop Bottom. The station, standing but in disrepair, is behind me.

Rare and obxcure
Title:  Rare and obxcure
Description:  The Adirondack RR had an RSC 2 that had originally been built for Florida Power and Light. Amid the turmoil of that operations last days, it wound up getting moved out of Thendara, ultimately winding up on display at Utica. It also barnstormed a bit-dead in tow, it hadnt run in years-and was part of this years Steamtown Railfan Weekend. It is coupled to an equally interesting unit, Al Luetke's Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley U30B 901, painted and numbered as if it was part of the NYO&W's fleet. It was an attractive unit.

Diesels too
Title:  Diesels too
Description:  Steamtown had a good roster of diesels from the late steam era-sometimes there were more of them running than steam power. We see two from that period, DLW 637, an F 7, and DLW 514, a GP 7, along with D&H 7312. The D&H unit would not come along til the 70s, but the colors date to the early 60s. The 514 was something of a chameleon. It also wore the colors of NKP, same number, while it was at Steamtown.

Arriving at the DLW station
Title:  Arriving at the DLW station
Description:  One of the benefits of running Steamtown trains on the ex DLW was that the station at Kingsley needed minimal structural work to get it in shape-the DLW built everything on the cutoff for the ages. One of the weekend excursions from Scranton arrives at Kingsley on a September weekend. Sadly, the DLW didnt build for the vandals, and several years after the trains stopped coming here, the building had been so badly damaged it had to be torn down.

Backward running

Description:  The train had no place to turn the engine at Kingsley, so the return to Scranton was done in reverse. Its not the most photogenic look for a steam engine, and most photographers shot the northbound trip, and bagged the return.
