The junction used to be where the CNW line from Milwaukee to Wyeville and beyond crossed the original CNW line from Janesville to Fond du Lac of the Chicago, St. Paul and Fond du Lac Railroad. Now the junction only serves to access what is now the branch line to Watertown. I thought I found an unknown ghost when I spotted this, alas, this is a very well known location. |

I worked at an adjacent business from 1991 thru 1995 and recall the building was there before they put up the larger one to the rear around 1992. The FRVRR used to keep an old GP unit here, and since they didn't seem to do much different from the CNW, I would imagine they had too. |

Tower CF is where the north industrial spur of the CNW crossed the Soo as it looped to the west of Oshkpsh. |

Former C&NW R.o.W. |
| Description: |
Curving generally northwest out of the Oshkosh yard, the C&NW (and FVRR later) had an industrial lead that ran along the south side of the Fox River to serve a multiple number of businesses. By the time the Fox Valley Rail Road took over, Morgan Manufacturing was about all that was left along this route. The line also connected with the former Soo Line track in Oshkosh on the south side of the river that was used to gain access to some C&NW track on the north shore of the river. The industrial lead which was accessed via the Soo swing bridge, went along the river through the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh campus to Rockwell and may have actually served the UWO at one time. This track, originally put in by the Milwaukee Road, also connected with the northern C&NW industrial lead at a wye, where the track not only completed a loop around the city, but had a line run off to Hortonville and beyond. Visible in the shot are Court Tower Apartments, to the right, and downtown Oshkosh with it's taller structures. The Fox River lies between the buildings visible in the shot and the strip of grass beyond the road visible running across the photo. |

On the east side of Ripon, the CNW crossed Silver Creek at the mouth of where the creek expands to become the Gothic Mill Pond. Silver Creek was dammed around 1854 by Ripons founders to supply power for their mills. This part of the CNW ran from Fond du Lac through many small communities to Wisconsin Rapids. Between Fond du Lac and Wisconsin Rapids, only the small portion in Ripon is left in service. The portion between Rosendale and Fond du Lac is a nice recreation trail. |

The track curving to the right is newer, put in by the modern era Wisconsin Central to connect the former Soo Line right of way to the CNW in order to serve the Little Rapids Corporation specialty paper mill in town. |

This is all that is left that even closely resembles the plethora of tracks that blanketed the "Flats" serving numerous businesses in the not too distant past. Only one industry, Neenah Paper remains down in this Fox River bottom area. neenah paper may be expanding in this location, if all things pass by the city governing bodies. Good news for an industry that has taken big set backs in this area since 2008. The view is looking generally west from Lawe Street. The Oneida "Skyline" Bridge is what crosses over the tracks, and river. |

The Northern Industrial Spur of the Canadian National |
| Description: |
This is the end of the industrial spur that serves the northern industries in Oshkosh, WI. The track comes off the former CNW main just north of Harrison Street, at what was Tower CF, where it crossed the Soo Line to access the idustries along the lead. There were at least five or six businesses served along this industrial line, but only two remain. The run around seen here is used to service Pluswood, and it may come in handy to service the International Group, located closer to the main between Jackson and Main Streets. The track continues beyond the red flag to within 20 feet of Highway 45, formerly Highway 110, still also known as Algoma Blvd. The grade crossing is removed and track on the opposite side of 45 is torn up. There was once a wye located opposite 45 where this track connected with the CNW (former Milwaukee, Lakeshore and Western) line that went on through Medina and beyond. (Now the Wiouwash Trail) Following the wye track that went to the left would have taken one back into Oshkosh along the Fox River to connect with the Soo Line track on the northern approaches of the Soo's swing bridge. |

Looking generally east toward downtown Wausau along the former CNW tracks. This line was once a part of the CNW line from Green Bay through Wausau on to Marshfield and Merrillan. At Marshfield, there was a junction with the CNW line which cut across the state from Sheboygan to Fond du Lac, Ripon on to Marshfield. After Marshfield, the line connected with the Twin Cities Division at Merrillan. This area is quite scenic and has a fair amount of activity for the rail fan. This part of the line branched off and served industries along the west side of the river. |

Looking along the rails through the former CNW bridge across the Manitowoc River on the Two River Spur Track. The spur track runs 9miles from Manitowoc to Two Rivers as part of what was the Shoreline Sub of the CNW. The view looks toward the direction of Two Rivers, as it would be by rail, not by compass direction. The spur is out of service, but the connection track that connected this part of the line to the Soo Line is still in place and is in fact the entrance for the CN into Manitowoc. The CN is the only road in town now and comes from Neenah along the Manitowoc Sub. |

The CNW Two River Spur Track had this interesting bridge over the Soo Line right of way into Manitowoc. The Soo ran straight under the bridge, where the track connecting with the CNW was the one that runs off to the right. From this point, the Soo rails are out of service, with no connection to the outside world. Satellite footage shows some of the rails still exist within the private confines of some of the industries in town. This bridge is dated to 1896, and the spur track had a maximum weight limit of 210,000 lbs. (CNW Timetable No.6 effective Jan. 1 1984) |

On the Wisconsin side of the Menominee River, the CNW ran along Water Street and had this branch come off to access an island with multiple water front businesses at this Great Lakes port city. In the early 20th Century, there was a myriad of tracks in this industrial area. Today, there is but the remains of one spur that runs to a Waupaca Foundry facility. It is out of service, and mostly torn up. This trestle remains as the most visible piece of that line. |

The former Chicago Northwestern bridge across the Peshtigo River. The Line is now part of the CN empire, but there isn't much work for the railroad in Peshtigo now. The Badger Paper Mill Inc. spur is out of service and mostly torn up, though the mill is still in operation. There is a short passing siding/run around track in town, but the only business that looks like it could easily get rail service is the Peshtigo Feed Mill, and that looks to be a very rare occurrence, if ever at all either. |

This is what is left of the CNW swing span across the Fox River in Oshkosh. It was originally built in 1899. Fortunately, there was some thought about it's historic significance, and part of it was saved. The ends were lopped off and placed here on opposite sides of a small channel off the Fox River in Oshkosh. I personally think it would look better had they tried to tie the two halves together across the top, to actually convey the look that it still bridged water. At least something was saved. |

Branching off to head northwest across the Wisconsin River, the CNW used a series of bridges spanning the Wisconsin River to serve some industry along the west side of the river. This bridge crosses a slough and is the first of a pair that cross to to Barkers Island. From the island, the right of way crosses the main part of the Wisconsin River and continues onto the west bank. |

The line off to the right is a branch from the former Green Bay to Marshfield main that served industry along the west of the Wisconsin River. The track that heads to the left is the former main. The line to Marshfield from Green Bay was truncated at Wausau by 1984. |

Chicago and Northwestern Depot |
| Description: |
The Milwaukee, Lakeshore and Western was the second railroad to reach Wausau. It arrived in 1880. In 1882, the railroad was bought by the Chicago and Northwestern. In 1899, the CNW built this station to provide service to its growing business in the area. The light colored siding on each end of the station appears to be the result of enclosing the open end platforms. Earlier photos show the same roof line, but with open ends. The bridge in the foreground is spanning the slough, viewing from the east side of the river. The line is currently operated by the Canadian National. |
