The single-story, flat-roofed building in the picture's center is the main office for BLU. Watco formed BLU to operate on lines local lines purchased from Norfolk Southern Railroad south and west of Asheville, NC.

Asheville, NC, Nov 28, 2015, 9:54am: GE ES44AC NS 8129 sits in Norfolk Southern Railroad’s Asheville yard at the head of an empty coal train waiting for a crew to take it north to the coal mines of Appalachia. Second unit is EMD SD90MAC NS 7245, one of 100 Union Pacific Railroad leased units returned to Electromotive Diesel and purchased by NS in September, 2014. The NS-patched 7245 is still in UP yellow and gray, eventually to be painted in the NS horse head paint scheme.

Asheville, NC, Feb 8, 2016, 12:20pm: Norfolk Southern empty coal train 745 waits at the NS yard in Asheville before heading west to the Appalachian coal mines. Power is Reading Railroad heritage unit SD70ACe NS 1067 leading GE D9-44CW NS 9634 and EMD SD90MAC NS 7241, a former Union Pacific unit still painted in UP yellow and gray with NS patches. Most of the pictures I take from this location are in the late morning or very early afternoon while I am on my way to my second shift job. The train is facing north. The only time the sun is on this side is early morning, and there is no good access to the other (western) side of this location, and that is why most of my pictures from here are backlit.

On the right is EMD SD60I NS 6759 at the front of train 745, an empty coal train headed to Bull’s Gap, Tennessee, then on to the Appalachian coal mines. In the middle is EMD SD40-2 WAMX 4204 (under a SD-45 body) at the front of Blue Ridge Southern Railroad’s train T31 as it gets ready to roll on the return trip of its daily Canton-Asheville-Canton run. On the left is yard job and local PA01 mother-slug set consisting of EMD SD40-2 NS 3094 and cab slug RP-E4C NS 722.

BLU train 33 parked
Description:
Asheville, NC, April 25, 2016, 8:47am: Watco Company’s Blue Ridge Southern (BLU) train T33 is shut down in front of the west end tower at Norfolk Southern Railroad’s Asheville yard. T33 is the night train that makes the Canton-Asheville-Canton run, but is parked this morning after running out of crew time while waiting for clearance to leave Asheville for the return to Canton. WAMX 4203, 4202, and 4204, EMD SD40-2s in SD45 car bodies, is waiting for a crew from BLU’s main office in Canton, about 20 miles west of Asheville. Just to the east of BLU's locomotives is the NS yard unit.

The high sun and shadows make it hard to see that one of the wheel sets is off the tracks.

First responder train power
Description:
Asheville, North Carolina, August 1, 2017, 6:37pm: NS 5642 EMD GP38-2 is painted in a special scheme and is used to pull the Norfolk Southern safety train to different locations in the NS system. Unfortunately, while the train was at the NS yard in Asheville it was blocked from view by a cut of plastic pellet covered hoppers, and there was no way to get any pictures of the train itself.
