CB&Q VO-1000 9378
Title:  CB&Q VO-1000 9378
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9378 at North Kansas City, Missouri, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in December 1944 (c/n 71977), traded for new power during February 1966. It was one of 30 VO-1000's allotted to the CB&Q by the War Production Board during World War II. The VO-1000's were assigned 9350-9379 road numbers. This particular locomotive has been retro-fitted with the four stack exhaust system developed by Baldwin to cure an overheating problem produced by the single exhaust. The CB&Q applied this fix to some but not all of their VO-1000's. This locomotive also displays the carbody changes applied by Baldwin during mid-1944. The cab and battery box ends are squared off, omitting of the contoured plates applied to the earlier version, and the frame ends are angled, instead of contoured.

CB&Q VO-1000 9378 detail
Title:  CB&Q VO-1000 9378 detail
Description:  CB&Q VO-1000 9378 at North Kansas City at Missouri on June 21, 1964, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a closeup of a photo posted earlier. As I was cleaning the scan, I noticed that the right half of the letter W in West was cleanly displayed over the louvers. It would appear the the CB&Q welded a piece of sheet metal over the louvers and painted it to match the otherwise stenciled slogan on the side of the locomotive. This is, of course, only of interest to CB&Q fans. Also note that these particular louvers appear to be cut inward to the carbody, whereas all the other louvers are punched outward. This may explain the need for a piece of sheet metal to continue the letter W over the louvers, which on all the other CB&Q locomotives, was simply painted over the louvers.
