Description:  Of course, everyone knows the story of why these guys were 44 tons and not 45? If a locomotive weighed 45 tons or greater, then union rules of the day stated that they must be manned by an engineer and an fireman. Anything less could be run by a single engineer. Hence, the 44-tonner was invented.
