Conrail SD40-2 6377 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Full disclosure; I marked the slide as Minneapolis, Minnesota, and I think that is in error. I shot a lot of film in Kansas City in April 1980, as a result, I did not mark everything correctly, it appears. Plus the weather was poor in KC, so I believe this photo is KC. That would explain the MKT caboose on the left. Any help appreciated. |

From his perch a little higher than CR #6377, CR conductor Ken Taylor took this closeup photo of a trio head into Conway yard. In the background is quite an assortment of CR locos - 5665, 6950, 7905 and even yard slug #1122. Not positive, but on the distant street, it appears to be a pair of Conrail. buses and a CR van parked in front of the brick CR headquarters. A lot of blue!!! |

There were two through freights on the Tier. OIBU and BUOI ran between Oak Island in Newark NJ and Frontier in Buffalo. The other pair was OIEL and ELOI, which ran between Oak Island and Elkhart, using the Meadville Line, the former EL Main Line, west of Hornell into Youngstown. OIEL ran most days east of Gang Mills, but ELOI was another story. There was not a lot of carload traffic(or much else for that matter) on the Meadville Line. The trains ran mostly at the insistence of NYSDOT, which had put up a pot full of money for track rehab, etc. The trains were often short-car counts in the teens-and would terminate in Gang Mills, with BUOI forwarding the cars. So it was an unusual thing to see ELOI in Elmira, and I caught it this day at Southport with a pair of EMDs. |
