This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18316), became BN 9974 sometime after the merger date (3/2/1970), and was sold for scrap August 12, 1975 to Joseph Simon & Sons, Tacoma, Washington.Typically, a Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train) would require a power car to power the lighting in the coaches. As I understand it, some of the CB&Q E8's and E9's were modified to permit the locomotive's auxiliary generator to power the lights in up to two coaches, thus alleviating the need for the power car. The coaches were still (at the time of this photo) heated with steam, and the air conditioning was powered by propane fueled Waukesha engines on each coach. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 westbound approaching the Naperville station on December 5, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was Saturday, and judging by the shadows, around noon. According to the CB&Q's Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #9 (effective Sunday October 25, 1964) this would be train #205, Saturday Only Passenger, due in Naperville at 12:22 PM. Also of interest is a two car Dinky without a power car. Several locomotives were modified to allow the 74 volts DC produced by the auxiliary generator to also power the lighting of a maximum of two gallery cars. Locomotives known to have been modified were numbers 9937B, 9938B, 9941B, 9945A, 9946B, 9948A, 9948B, 9971-74, and 9976. In addition, number 9946A was modified but restricted to one car. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 and E9 9989B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 12, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On the left is E8 9974 leading Train No. 108 stopping at most of the local stations between Naperville and Chicago, arriving at Union Station at 7:46AM. On the right is E9 9989B (the last E-unit delivered to the CB&Q) leading Train No. 110, skipping all the local stations after Lisle and Belmont, stopping next at Cicero, then all the local stations until arriving in Union Station at 7:35AM. Both are daily except Saturday and Sunday Dinkys (commuter trains). The primary purpose of Train No. 110 was to transport the west suburban employees of Western Electric to work, who's plant was located close to the Cicero station. The time is approximately 6:52AM, No. 108 is scheduled to stop at Naperville at 6.53AM, and No. 110 is due at 6:51AM. |

It was unusual for the two trains pictured to pause long enough for me to get two photos, here is the second shot. On the left is E8 9974 leading Train #108 stopping at most of the local stations between Naperville and Chicago, arriving at Union Station at 7:46AM. There is a distortion in the paint on the nose running vertically to the right of the headlight and over to the grab iron. At first I thought it was a dent, then I figured out it was the shadow of a pole behind me. Also note the replacement MU plug cover to the left of the upper headlight. The CB&Q was pretty good about keeping up appearances, and this locomotive would likely visit the paint shop soon so the missing stripes can be applied. |
