CNW SL-144 1198
Title:  CNW SL-144 1198
Description:  C&NW SL-144 1198, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive is pictured at a railroad industry trade fair on the site of the IC's Central Station, which had been torn down. In the left background is Soldier Field.

General Electric built this locomotive (c/n 41104) in October 1978 along with what became C&NW #1199 (c/n 41105) as demonstrators. It weighed 136 tons and was powered by two Cummins six cylinder KTA-1150-L diesels producing 550 horsepower each, totalling 1100 horsepower. The two demonstrators tested for two years on the C&NW before going to the BN and renumbered as 1100 and 1101.

C&NW SL-144 1198
Title:  C&NW SL-144 1198
Description:  C&NW SL-144 1198 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive is pictured on the site of Illinois Central's Central Station, which had been torn down. It is on display as part of a railroad equipment exposition. At the time I was employed as a photographer by a company that occupied the 52nd floor of that tall white building in the background (Standard Oil Building, later the Amoco Building). I happened to look out the window one day and saw all this equipment at what was normally an empty rail yard. Needless to say, I took an extra long lunch break that day. It probably didn't hurt that I was dressed in a sport coat and tie, looking like I belonged there as a company photographer. Number 1198 was one of two demonstrators built by GE in 1974.
