Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad Pullman built (number unknown) at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown date, photo by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. The date is a best guess, based on the automobiles in the background. The car is from the 400-419 number series, built by Pullman in 1923. When the CA&E arrived in Aurora in 1902, they terminated in the streets on tracks shared with the Aurora city lines. By 1927, plans were developed for a four track terminal with interlocking at roughly this location, but later revised to a single track on land fill along the Fox River, finally built in 1939. The passageway at the right side of the frame led to the New York Avenue bridge and the ticket office located in a store facing Broadway Street. |

Car #20 was constructed in 1902 by the Niles Car Company of Niles, Ohio. It is considered the oldest electric interurban car still operating in the United States." Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad coach 20 at South Elgin, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Ektachrome Chuck Zeiler. Number 20 was built by the Niles Car & Manufacturing Company in 1902. This was one of 30 cars ordered in 1902 to begin service on the Aurora Elgin & Chicago Railroad, chartered March23, 1906, later reorganized as the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad. Ten cars of the initial order were built by Niles, numbers 10 -28, even numbers only. The rest of the cars in the 1902 order were built by John Stephenson Car Company. |

Number 24 was built by the Niles Car and Manufacturing Company in 1902. I ballparked the posted date based on notes in CERA Bulletin 105 which indicate that the arched windows were blocked off during July 1943. This car was equipped with four GE66B traction motors, Baldwin trucks, two GE C6 controllers, seating for 52 passengers, and was retired in 1959. |
