Description: |
Great action shot of Alco-Schenectady built UP 4-8-4 #800 on the North Platte River Bridge. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "These engines were worked hard in service and responded exceptionally well. These engines were reported as frequently running at above 100 mph (161 kph)." Specs - serial #68808, class FEF-1, massive 77" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 24.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 465,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,611 lb. The loco was "vacated" in October of 1957. Arthur ??? photographer |

Long before the GP30 wore the number 806, this 1937 Alco-Schenectady built Northern loco did. As it sits in the afternoon sun in the Cheyenne yard barely a year old, it still has the "new" shine to it and little western dust or road grime yet. Specifics - FEF-1 class, 77" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 24.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 460,640 lb, tractive effort of 63611 lb. CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5143 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5143 at Denver, Colorado on October 31, 1954, photograph by H. O'Hanlon, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5143 was built by Baldwin in July 1922 (c/n 55536) and sold for scrap in December 1957. I don't know when pole filters were invented, but I'll bet our photographer sure wanted one. That looks like a couple of railfans in the shot on the right. |

UP 814 - ALCO FEF-1 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive |
Description: |
The first order of 20 4-8-4 Locomotives UP 800-819, were delivered in 1937. These got the Class FEF-1 and were designed mostly by UP's Motive Power Group to have 77" drivers, 24.5"x32" cylinders, an operating boiler pressure of 300 PSI, and a weight of 465,000 pounds resulting in a tractive effort of 63,611 pounds. These got a little better with the FEF-2, and maxed out with the FEF-3 class, finishing up with UP 844 in December 1944, bringing an end to new UP Steam Locomotives. The 814 is the lowest numbered remaining example of UP 4-8-4's. There is also the UP 833 in Ogden, UT, the 838 in Cheyenne which is the parts supply for the famous operating 844. |
