LI 0-8-0 #258 - Long Island RR |
Description: |
Nice original action photo of Long Island 0-8-0 yard switcher #258 in the Jamaica, NY, yard. Although I couldn't find any info about this loco except it is a member of the C51s class, Tom Beckett came to the rescue (see comment below). The loco was built by Alco-Pittsburgh in 1918 and served until being retired in 1950. The location listed on the photo may be in question as noted by Tom below so a little more research is needed. Thanks, Tom, for the help! The photo is from the Bob Lorenz collection and the date was given as just "1935." |

Fair quality original photo of the Long Island Railroad 0-8-0 yard switcher #269. No date, location or photographer was given for the photo. Although there was no information to be found online about this locomotive, Tom Beckett came to the rescue (see comment below) with Alco-Richmond as the builder in March 1924 according to his search in "Steel Rails to the Sunrise". After serving 27 years, it was retired in 1951. Thanks, Tom! |

Looking more like a road locomotive than a yard goat, its stubby wheels give it away however as it stis in front of the Bellevue, OH, roundhouse. Built by Alco-Pittsburgh as Wheeling & Lake Erie #5102 (serical #60154), it moved over to the Nickel Plate Road roster as NKP 272. The yard switcher was retired and sold for scrap on 1/19/1962 to Luntz Iron & Steel Company. Howard W. Ameling photo |

Description: |
This Alco-Cooke 0-8-0 yard switcher was built in 1923 as Pere Marquette #1315, class C-13. No date was given and the location by R.D. Patton was listed as Ganley's Ridge, WV. I cannot find that location anywhere. Can anyone help with this one? Jonathan Spurlock has found Handley, WV, as having several of the landmarks in a couple of photos that were marked as Ganley's Ridge, so will use that location until someone knows exactly where Ganley's Ridge is. |

EJE 0-8-0 #579 - Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Rwy |
Description: |
This beefy 0-8-0 yard switcher started life out as Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern Rwy 2-8-0 #579 (serial #44414). Records show that this was scrapped in September of 1948, the same date as this photo so this may be the last time it was seen before the scrapper's torch.
