In 1918, 857 2-10-0 decapods were built by Baldwin and Alco for the Russian Government but when the empire was overthrown, the locomotives were sold to American lines with 34 of these going to Seaboard Air Line. According to one source, the decapods, called "Russians" by SAL, were "ideal for logging and phosphate service on light-rail branches in Florida." | Description: |
Here is one of only three 2-10-0 decapods to appear on the ATSF roster. Built in 1901 by Alco-Schenectady, there were derailing difficulties when backing among other operating problems so only three were purchased. Original specs - class 988, 57" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 17.5x34" high pressue cylinders, 30x34" low pressure cylinders, engine weight 259,800 lb, tractive effort of 52,133 lb. At the request of the Czarist Russian government, ALCO built around a thousand of these light weight Decapods during WWI. Around 800 had been delivered before the Bolshevik revolution when deliveries ceased, leaving 200+ engines in the US. The USRA took them and distributed them to various railroads. Six examples still survive today, with Frisco 1630 at IRM being the "live one". |

| Description: |
This former Russian 2-10-0 Decapod was caught by F. W. Krambeck as it sits in the Kansas City, MO, yard. A note on the back of the photo states "On old KCFS&M transfer table." Part of the canceled Russian Decapod order due to the Russian Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Most often these narrow, tall Decapods with small drivers were used for slow drag service. The loco (along with 1621, 1625, 1630, & 1632) was sold to the Eagle Picher Mining Company in October of 1951. In 1964, the loco then was donated to Altus, OK, where it still sits enclosed in a fence as a static display. |
