Meadows. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engine Service Tracks at Meadows Yard near Kearny, New Jersey, on 28 January 1961. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4808 and at least four more units whose numbers are not recorded. #4808 is a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built by General Electric during July of 1935 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. Looks to me like all of these units are "Out of Service" since none of their pantographs are in the "up" position. ("Stoneborobranch"; #31 of 32) |

A pair of GG 1s work at Journal Square on the ex PRR Passaic & Harsimus branch. The PATH station at Journal Square in Jersey City was a great place to watch the action, especially in the days when electric engines still pulled the freight. The GG 1 fleet was split among NJ DOT, which got 13, and Amtrak and Conrail. |

PRR "Wilmington Shops," 1967 |
Description: |
Here is a post card via Peter Outerbridge entitled "Wilmington Shops." Caption On Reverse: "Wilmington Shops. The main electric shop for the Pennsylvania Railroad was located in Wilmington, Del. This shop also served Penn Central and Amtrak in later years to maintain their fleets of GG-1's and other electric locomotives. GG-1's monopolize the scene in this October 1967 view. Photo by Carl H. Sturner." All nine of the PRR locomotives pictured here are GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electrics rated at 4,620 horsepower each. Of those nine, three are identifiable: #4909, #4878, and #4809. #4909 and #4878 were built in Juniata: the former in December of 1941, the latter in February of 1939. #4809 was constructed by General Electric in July of 1935. |

CR GG1 #4809 |
Description: |
Whitelined and labeled "SCRAP", this once powerful locomotive sits in a scrap line at Enola, PA. Built by GE in July of 1935, the loco served the Pennsylvania, then Penn Central and finally Conrail before retirement in February of 1980. Conrail conductor Ken Taylor documented the long scrap line it sits in two years later. |
