Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1202
Title:  Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1202
Description:  Built by the Norfolk & Western shops in 1936 as class A articulated unit, it sported 70" drivers, developed a massive 300psi, had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of 108.27', and an engine weight of 573,000 lb. Although they had a rating of 13,000 tons slow freight, they could pull passenger trains at 70mph. The cheap coal available to N&W helped support these monsters of the rail until they were retired in 1958-59.

Description:  Here's a great shot of the massive faceplate of the Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1202 taken from an original negative by Don Morice. Note the solid pilot and hidden coupler pocket on this brute. Specs - NW Roanoke shops, 1936, class A, 70" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 24x30" cylinders, 573,000 lb engine wt, impressive tractive effort of 125,897 lb. The entire class of 43 units was retired between 1958-59.

NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Taken during a fan trip in 1958, this articulated class A locomotive built by the N&W shops in 1936 had 70" drivers, developed a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and exerted a massive 125,897 lb tractive force. Roller bearings throughout made this one of the peak efficient steam locomotives ever built and could compete with effectively with diesels for awhile. Unfortunately, they too succombed to the scrap pile and were retired between 1958-59. This may have been one of its last runs before retirement, if not THE last one!

NW 2-6-6-4 #1208 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1208 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Beautiful action shot of the westbound 1937 Norfolk & Western Roanoke shops built articulated #1208. According to www.steamlocomotives.com "One of Norfolk & Western's finest designs, these articulateds featured all the latest components when introduced in the late 1930s .In addition to a high-pressure boiler, an A had a cast-steel frame and roller bearings on virtually all surfaces. The firebox had 57 sq ft of arch tubes, but no circulators or syphons. Max consumption rates per hour were 7 tons of coal burned and 116,055 lb of water evaporated. Between Williamson, WV and Portsmouth, Ohio, these engines had a tonnage rating of 13,000 tons of slow freight. Between Portsmouth and Columbus, they were rated at 5,200 tons of time freight. And they could pull passenger trains at 70 mph. R.P. Morris photo

NW 2-6-6-4 #1218 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1218 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Great face shot of Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 as it sat outside in June of 1987 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Currently the loco still resides at the museum but in a much more protected spot than it had in 1987. An unknown photographer caught this image.
