L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville local Number 7 has just passed through Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4) and crossed the Industrial Canal drawbridge (milepost 801.4). The train was scheduled into New Orleans at 3:45 P.M., after a 12-hour trip from Montgomery, Alabama. It was established in 1946 and discontinued in September 1953. The switch in the foreground was the connection with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, at the north end of the GM&O's Canal Yard.

The train was powered by K-5 class 4-6-2 245. This was one of six light Pacifics (240-245) assigned to the L&N by the United States Railroad Administration during the First World War. These were built by Alco-Richmond in 1919, after the end of the War. After the USRA was abolished, the railroad got 20 more K-5's: Baldwin built eight (264-271) in 1923 and Alco-Brooks constructed 12 (272-283) in 1924. The 245 was retired on 22 June 1954. L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville train No. 7 was arriving in New Orleans from Montgomery behind 4-6-2 280. No. 7 was a long-distance local and usually ran with just five cars, but today’s train has at least two sleeping cars on the rear. The train was coming off of the median of Elysian Fields Avenue, crossing North Peters Street and would run along the Mississippi River until it got to the railroad’s station about a mile away. The automobile next to the pole on the left was headed for the Third District Ferry landing, and the two wharves on the right occupy the site of a former Southern Pacific train ferry landing which was abandoned when the Huey P. Long Bridge opened in December 1935. An unidentified Lykes Lines vessel is docked on the right. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Pacific 280
Title:  L&N Pacific 280
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 Pacific 280 was pulling out of the railroad’s Canal Street Station in New Orleans with a short northbound train at. The train was noteworthy because it had a combine in front of its baggage car. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one of a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. It was one of the last Pacifics built for the L&N and one of the last to be retired, on 23 April 1954. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 34
Title:  L&N Train No. 34
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 280 was awaiting the departure of train No. 34 – the combined Piedmont Limited-Gulf Wind – from Canal Street Station in New Orleans at 5:00 PM. The Piedmont Limited was bound for New York City via the L&N, West Point Route, Southern Railway, and the Pennsylvania; but between New Orleans and Flomaton, Alabama it included cars for Jacksonville via the Gulf Wind. Today's train was unusual because it had a combine ahead of its baggage car, probably a dead-head move. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. It was one of the last Pacifics built for the L&N and one of the last to be retired, on 23 April 1954. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  In 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue in New Orleans, about midway between NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) and N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7), so that an underpass could be built there. Southbound local No. 7 had just crossed the main line of the Southern Railway at NO&NE Tower, which can be seen in the left background, and was at the north end of the temporary trackage, passing a temporary approach signal for the New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing at N.O.T. Tower. This train was powered by K-5 class Pacific 280, built by Alco’s Brooks Works in 1924; and included a sleeping car on the rear, an unusual occurrence. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam power on No. 7, as well as 9, 10 and 12, on 27 July 1951, the underpass was dedicated on 16 April 1952, No. 7 was discontinued in 1953 and the 280 was retired on 23 April 1954. Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 282 was leading Number 7 along the Mississippi River at New Orleans, just a block away from the train's destination at the Canal Street Station. The tracks on the left of the train belonged to the Southern Pacific, while most of those on the other side were owned by the New Orleans Public Belt. L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 282 was leading train No. 10 into the curve at the intersection of North Peters Street and Elysian Fields Avenue, just a few minutes after leaving the railroad's Canal Street Station. The tracks in the right foreground belonged to the Southern Pacific, while those on the other side of the train were owned by the New Orleans Public Belt. L&N 282 was a USRA design light Pacific and was one of the last 4-6-2's built for the L&N. It was one of a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924, and was retired on 8 January 1953.

The steamship JAMES LYKES was docked on the other side of the Esplanade Avenue Wharf. For many years the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company had a major presence in the port here. The ship was a C1-B design cargo vessel launched by Bethlehem Shipbuilding at Sparrows Point, Maryland in 1940 and it was broken up at Panama City, Florida in 1972. (approximate day of photo)

RFP 4-6-2 #301 - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac
Title:  RFP 4-6-2 #301 - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac
Description:  Here is another sharp looking example a 1918 Pacific loco built by Alco-Richmond as #10. It had very tall 75" drivers and developed 200 psi of boiler pressure for its 26"x28" cylinders. The engine weight started out at 285,000 lbs. and produced a tractive effort of 42,800 lbs. but in 1926 the RF&P shops rebuilt it to increase firebox size and was renumbered to 301. As a result, it increased the weight to 319,600 lb with no appreciable change in tractive effort. The entire class was scrapped in 1950 when RF&P dieselized. The date is an approximation. Warren W. MKT 4-6-2 #380 - Missouri-Kansas-Texas
Title:  MKT 4-6-2 #380 - Missouri-Kansas-Texas
Description:  Fairly nice older b&w photo (possibly a reprint) by an unknown photographer of Missouri-Kansas-Texas 4-6-2 Pacific #380 built by Alco-Schenectady in 1915. Specs - H-3a class, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 272,000 lb, tractive effort of 40,753 lb. I could not find the serial number for this loco. No date was given but with Mike Woodruff's help (see comment below), it would appear to be 1920 or earlier.
