| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 13, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18313). Usually, the CB&Q would have attached a power car to this train. The power car was a modified commuter coach with a generator, but in this case certain locomotives were modified to allow some of the power from the locomotive's auxiliary generator to be routed to the coach's lights. The air conditioning was provided by onboard Waukesha engine powered by four propane cylinders on each bilevel coach. The heat was steam. There wasn't a lot of electrical demand in those days. |
