It was always a treat to catch D&H run-through power on the EL, such as on this westbound at Ashland. Date approximate.

Ken Roble General Since Conrail decided not to operate the EL as a whole, the goverment should have at least handed it over to D&H so competition could have been spread equelly 11/24/2008 4:55:50 PM

Eric Rickert General Ken, both the D&H and the EL in the 1970's were owned by Dereco, a holding company controlled by the Norfolk and Western. I'm sure Dereco could've conveyed the El routes to the D&H if they had chosen, but given that EL was hemorraging cash I'm sure they preferred to throw it off on Conrail. The best chance of a true competitor to Conrail would've been if the Chessie System had been conveyed the EL's Ohio-New Jersey routes. However, EL's greedy labor unions refused to make concessions , thus lumping everything into big blue Conrail for the next 20 years. 2/7/2009 10:56:34 PM
