Jim Dodds General Wow, amazing, one of the only photos I could find of this line post-1950 :O Awesome pic :) Do you have any idea why IC abandoned this line? 11/27/2009 11:40:02 PM
Rick Doty General I think after the IC GM&O merge the former GM&O line now used by Amtrak was shorter but I don't know for sure. 11/29/2009 8:43:47 PM
Jim Dodds General Oh, well, thanks for the information. Today the line only runs from Springfield to Farmersville, where it serves a small mine. That is less than 1/4 of the original line. 1/13/2010 5:55:14 PM
Jim Dodds General Also it may have to do with their bankruptcy issues that they had in the '80s, as most of the IC system was torn out in the '80s from what I understand... 1/13/2010 5:56:05 PM
Chris Balducci General Illinois Central used trackage rights on the Chicago & North Western south of Glen Carbon, IL to get to and from East St. Louis. With the ex-Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio (former Alton) line available after the merger of the IC and GM&O, Illinois Central Gulf could access East St. Louis without trackage rights. ICG had financial problems in the 70s and 80s, but they never went bankrupt. They sold more track than they abandoned before becoming IC again in 1988. 4/29/2010 9:41:16 PM
