CNJ GP7  Contributor's Pick!
This is a former CNJ GP7. It hasn't had much use and is stored down in Tuckahoe. Apparently its wheel flange thickness is outside the allowable measurement and would need new wheel sets in order to be allowed to pull passenger trains again. I'd love to see this doing sand runs again from Woodmansie to Lakehurst it the NJSL ever is able to get operation going - looks promising though! Unique spotting features are the 'Bug Eye' Classification lights, the electrical cabinet on the end of the long hood for Passenger car power (Similarly to some C&NW and B&M Units), Cab Signals Box (next to cab, 3 Silver latches on it), Bell on the end of short hood and steam generators. As delivered these units were set up for Long Hood Forward, but as shown here the short hood now has the "F" designation.

Tom Beckett General Great looking unit. Just enough dirt on it to look like it's actually in service. Hoem page 02/26/2016 2/26/2016 2:26:14 AM
Tom Beckett General Home page again today. Still a nice looking unit. Technically, this is a GP7P-note the squared off long hood. At one time, this housed a steam generator for passenger service. These units were as likely to be hauling commuters out of Jersey City(and later, Newark) as they were freight. 4/17/2016 3:45:06 AM
Ben Kranefeld General You may get your wish. The sand hauling operation by NJSL between Woodmansie and Lakehurst is as close to happening as it ever has. Not sure if #1523 will be doing the honors, but the thought of this and sister GP7 #1524 on the former CNJ Southern Division is quite alluring! 6/29/2016 5:07:18 PM
