Benjamin Schlechter General Very Nice. I think i remember seeing it as a kid and a NS loco on it shortyl before they took the track up. This was also the site of the old SR depot, and this line was for Knox-Asheville trains that had to stop in downtown Morristown. 7/30/2012 6:23:51 PM
Johnny Winkler General This was the mainline to Asheville untill the "New Line" was built in 1925. Passenger trains continued to use this line untill some unknown time in the 1960s when the west Morristown depot was built. In the early 1920s there was a chicken wholesaler near what is now Morris Blvd here and there were so many car/train collisions that the area was nicknamed slaughterhouse crossing for more than just the chickens. 7/31/2012 2:27:45 PM
Benjamin Schlechter General I take it that the Sperry Rail Service Car was used to repair the railroad lines. 8/3/2012 2:02:40 PM
Benjamin Schlechter General I wonder though, if this had remained the Asheville line, if they would've added signals and gates? Too bad the line was placed out of service after they stopped picking up junk at the junkyard. 8/7/2012 9:42:12 PM
Johnny Winkler General Actually the scrap yard was shipping several cars a week when the decision to abandon was made.I heard that upper management was not happy with the cost of recent repairs on the line and fired someone who authorized the work.At least that is what a track laborer told my dad at the time. 8/8/2012 11:28:33 AM
Benjamin Schlechter General Too bad though that NS didn't wish to keep that line going for the junkyard. If there had been something else on that line along w/the junkyard, i'm sure they would've kept it. 8/23/2012 11:07:28 PM
Benjamin Schlechter General I wonder why NS didn't continue using this line as a means for Bristol to Asheville traffic? There was part of this spur that crossed Cumberland. 9/21/2012 8:26:36 PM
Johnny Winkler General Not enough freight going that way. 9/24/2012 3:14:26 PM
Benjamin Schlechter General I could imagine what this intersection would be like today if the New Line section of the S-Line had not been built. They would've had to add signals and gates. 10/5/2012 10:27:18 PM
Benjamin Schlechter General I think that the Bristol/Asheville traffic had other routes to go: 1. They went down the old Clinchfield 2. They Switched onto the BL line at Bulls Gap 3. Go to Knoxville and switch onto an Asheville-bound train. 2/17/2013 5:55:12 PM
Johnny Winkler General They didn't go down the Clinchfield.More than likely Asheville bound freight would have been on the Bristol-Knoxville local train, than put on too an Asheville train. 2/18/2013 11:44:07 AM
