Mystery locomotive...solved  Contributor's Pick!
Thanks to Chuck Zeiler for putting me on the right track to finding the lineage of the 2nd unit in this photo. It is indeed an ex-GN GP20 with the high short hood of a long-hood-first configuration. The folks at greatnorthernempire.net confirm that GN GP20 2009 did become BN 2009 - don't have a date on that though - and wore cascade green until being sold to Naparano Iron & Metal on 6/27/1986. So that means there was no road number 2009 on the BN roster at all between June 86 and March 1990 when BN GP20 2037 - formerly CB&Q 901 - was re-built to a GP20C and re-christened #2009. Kinda fun digging all that up.

Chuck Zeiler General The second unit might be ex-GN 2009, a GP20. If I'm not mistaken the GN GP20's were set up to run long hood forward. 11/13/2012 10:51:20 PM
