B&O 2-8-8-0 #7200 - Baltimore & Ohio  Contributor's Pick!       
Built in 1916 by Alco-Schenectady, this behemouth was an EL-2 class with 58" drivers. It's high pressure cylinders were 26"x31" while its low pressure cylinders were 41"x31" (diameter & stroke). The total engine weight tipped the scales at 485,600 and it was able to generate a tractive effort of 91,993 lb. Rebuilt to simple (four 24X32 cylinders) by B&O shops between 1930-42, the entire class was retired by 1954.

Freightcar "1" General Looks like the 41" low pressure cylinders were replaced in the rebuild. They probably went from compound to simple working as well, you can tell by the double smokestack which tells you the from and rear cylinders exhausted through their own blast pipe instead of the high pressure feeding the low pressure cylinders. 1/5/2014 6:23:16 AM
