Hi hood leader  Contributor's Pick!
Not a surprise on the Southern, all of whose road units were high short hood. This was not to house a steam generator, and on some units. Southern thought they offered more protection in case of a collision, though they ran most of their power long hood forward anyway, along with neighbor N&W. Thus it was unusual to see one with the short hood leading, as is the case here. The cab on this unit is also replete with Southern touches. The most noticeable is the computer check letter, in this case the "A" next to the road number. All Southern units had one, to distinguish them in the computer system in place at the time. There was a formula for assigning them, so the system was not random. Also, note the initials below the number. This engine is sublettered for subsidiary Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific, which was the owner of the line from Cincy to Atlanta. Other subletterings were for Central of Georgia, Alabama Great Southern, and Georgia Southern and Florida, among others.
