CRI&P 1271 and Two U-Boats Pass the Tower  Contributor's Pick!
On Sept. 1, 1969 Rock Island GP7 #1271 lead a westbound freight past the Joliet (Illinois) Tower and over the diamonds crossing ATSF and GM&O tracks. The Joliet Union Station was and still is about 40 feet to the left and slightly behind the photographer. RI and GM&O Chicago commuter trains terminated here and still do as METRA. Interestingly, each railroad stopped six intercity trains here in 1969: three to Chicago and three to the south and west, for a total of 18 trains. Today six Amtrak trains stop here, three to Chicago and one each to St. Louis, Kansas City, and Texas.
