UP 4012 |
Description: |
Big Boy 4012 rests in the yard at Laramie late in 1958. The 4000-series behemoth was built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company, and would become the 13th of 25 Big Boys Union Pacific would come to own. The 4012 would be retired in 1959 with the rest of UPs Big Boy fleet. The engine would then be donated in 1962 to Steamtown, USA, a tourist operation in Bellows Falls, Vermont. The 4012 was originally to be accompanied by a 4-6-6-4 Challenger and office car as part of the donation, but only the 4012 would make it to Vermont. In 1984, the engine would be moved to its current home in Scranton, Pennsylvania at the Steamtown National Historic Site. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

UP 3985 "Challenger" |
Description: |
The special Union Pacific steam train is seen departing West Chicago, Illinois, June 18, 2002 heading west. It is headed to Saint Paul, Minnesota to be displayed later. At this time the 4-6-6-4 “Challenger” steam locomotive, #3985, is the largest operating in the world. There are two sets of driving wheels and the frame is “articulated.” This way the wheels turn separately of the main frame to operate better where the track has tight turns. This engine was built in 1943. UP retired it from regular service in 1957. It was restored to operation once again in 1981 for use on special trips by UP. They converted it to run with oil instead of coal in 1990. UP ordered 105 “Challenger” locomotives between 1936 and 1943. They are about 122 feet long and weigh more than 1 million pounds. 3985 is the only one in operation of the two remaining. (Canon 35mm S.L.R. camera, Kodak Gold 800 print film) |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1517 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Another fine example of the 1940 Alco built Challenger-type locomotive. The massive loco was a powerhouse with 95,800 lb of tractive effort. Unfortunately the loco only got to serve for 12 years before being sold for scrap in October of 1952. Specifics - four 20.5x32" cylinders, 69" drivers, an impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, and a tractive effort of 94,000 lb. View DH #1513 in this album for a detailed comment concerning the smooth ride this monster provided. No photographer listed. |
