The Lone Star (on the left) had arrived from Chicago a couple of hours earlier and will be serviced and cleaned overnight by the Amtrak crew based in Houston. This crew also watered the Sunset Limited (on the right) when it passed through town every other day. This was the westbound Sunset headed to Los Angeles. The dome on the Sunset was an ex-CB&Q car built by Budd in 1954 (the info I have says it ran on the NP North Coast Limited?). It was a 4 duplex single room-4 roomette-4 double bedroom car rebuilt in 1967 with a buffet under the dome. The dome seats were rebuilt as lounge seating. It looks like an ex-Southern sleeper back of the dome (the Southern Crescent was taken over by Amtrak a month or two before). This was probably the transcontinental sleeper (NY-LA). |

Built in 1950 by Budd in Lot #9624-040 as SP Class 83-D-3 48 seat diner #10214, 1 of 6 such cars (#10210-#10215) built in that Lot for the SUNSET LIMITED; the Lot was ordered in June 1948, cars were delivered between June and July 1950. On the SUNSET LIMITED, dining and lounge cars were known by theme names: these 6 diners were the AUDUBON cars, the Class 83-L-2 club lounges were the FRENCH QUARTER cars, and the Class 83-DL-2 diner-(hamburger grill)-club lounges were the PRIDE OF TEXAS cars. In 1971, Amtrak acquired 5 of these 6 cars as #8060-#8064, 3 of these 5 cars were later converted to HEP and are still active; SP retained the #10214, which was renumbered in 1974 to #290. Here we see NS detour symbol R71 heading to New Orleans. This train originated in Birmingham, Alabama and is a combined CSX train 579 and CSX train 615. Power is CSXT SD40-2 8259, CSXT C30-7 7072, and CSXT GP40-2 4447. The trailing unit GP40-2 4447 was the last 4-axle locomotive delivered to CSX predecessor B&O and bears the name of retired Chessie System General Manager of Operations Arch McElvany.
