D&H C424m #70 at E. Binghamton yd.
Despite the dwindling variety of diesels offered by the two remaining builders by 1990, there was still a remarkable variety on NS, and they seemed to run systemwide, and onto connections. The line up at the East Binghamton fuel pad this day bears this out, as we see a GP 59, B32-8, and GP 50, models that were not huge sellers compared to the SD40 types and C30-7s that pervaded most of the big roads rosters at that time.
The C424s would stay in service for a few more years on the D&H, as CP had then quite a stable of them, and they fit right in with CP's power. One is at the fuel pad with a group of NS units, up from Potomac Yard.
A front end roster view of newly rebuilt at M-K 7407, one of eight units rebuilt and repainted into the lightning stripe scheme. This unit, along with the other 39s, would go to CSX once CP took over the D&H-I saw one in Ohio on the ex B&O about six years later-but the 38s would last a long while into the CP era. As I write this in 2016, there is still at least one in this scheme.
PYRP rolls north, about to take the big curve at Wells Bridge, seen between the trusses of the road bridge across the river there.
The power off PYRP pulls up to cross back over to its train after setting off cars. This view shows the shop building, now largely unoccupied, as all locomotive work is done elsewhere. We see a couple of pieces of D&H equipment, though. A wide vision caboose in the distance, and a pig flat, not a common car type on the D&H.
PYRP rolls past FA tower in the Oneonta yard. FA stood for Fonda Av, where the tower was located.
PYRP behind a pair of ex Reading units, and Alco and a BAR unit passes the NYSEG Jennison station as it approaches Bainbridge. It is about to roll under NY 7.
PYRP is pulling up the runner to the north end, and will shortly be on its way across the Susquehanna as it starts its journey to Canada with a couple of ex Reading units leading.
D&H 70 rolls into East Binghamton with a transfer cut from the NYSW.
D&H 70 puts its train away after returning from the NYSW. How about the new paint on that CSX box??
PYRP has the power on and is waiting for his pushers to couple on in the back, then its off to attack Belden Hill.
PYRP rolls across the Harpursville bridge, as seen from the opposite side of the usual view, this taken from NY 235. Three Guilford units have the train in hand this late Saturday afternoon.
A set of Guilford painted power leads PYRP through BD, across Conrail and into Bevier St. The pushers are on, and he will make a run at the hill as soon as his train clears the interlocking.
Power sets on the North end of the EB Yards
NS 4 axle power dominates the D&H service tracks, with three different models represented.
