The long hood stands tall in the display area. The tall short hood was cut down in 1992 to give crews better visibility - a common practice by many railroads.
The unmistakable arrow logo of the DMIR shines on the SD18 unit.
Built by EMD in 1960, DMIR #193 was the last of the nineteen SD18's ordered. By taking over the ore and freight traffic, this group helped to put the last DMIR steam locos out of service. Along in the late 1990's, it was sent to work on the Wisconsin Central line to pay off horsepower hours that had accrued between DMIR and WC. In May of 1998, it was finally donated to the Lake Superior RR Museum by DMIR. It is occasionally used on the North Shore Scenic tourist excursion.

DMIR 193 departs Duluth with a excursion
This was an amazingly unexpected catch during my trip with my family to the North Shore in July 2019. In this photo, 332 is leading an excursion train from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum to Two Harbors and was actually backing into the Two Harbors depot when this shot was taken.
DMIR 193 pulls DMIR 332 & train back to the depot. DMIR 193 is now a lonely "Missabe sister" with the DMIR 316 having left for North Dakota late in 2019.
