Nice group of color photos by an as yet unidentified rail fan of Chicago Great Western DS44-1000 Baldwin locos.
Baldwin built this switcher in July of 1949 as Chicago Great Western DS44-1000 #36 (serial #74227). After the CGW/CNW merger in 1968, it was relettered CNW #36. Shortly after that, the loco was retired in January of 1969. Specs - 6 cylinder 606SC turbocharged prime mover, 1000 horsepower, B-B wheel arrangement, Westinghouse 362-D, traction motors and tractive effort of 57,500 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now part of my collection.
I believe CGW #40 is still wearing the original paint scheme from Baldwin. This switcher was built by Baldwin in July of 1949 as Chicago Great Western DS44-1000 #40 (serial #74231). Upon the merger of CGW & CNW in 1968, it was relettered CNW #40 but only lasted on the roster until being retired in January of 1969. Original DS44-1000 specs - 6 cylinder 606SC turbocharged prime mover, 1000 horsepower, B-B wheel arrangement, Westinghouse 362-D, traction motors and tractive effort of 57,500 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now part of my collection.

Original DS44-1000 specs - 6 cylinder 606SC turbocharged prime mover, 1000 horsepower, B-B wheel arrangement, Westinghouse 362-D, traction motors and tractive effort of 57,500 lb.
