Miscellaneous photos from the Midwest.
An unexpected catch on the way to Huron, SD for a CNWHS meet. The station is to my left out of view.
The Newton Yard switcher is on the west side of the yard classifying cars on a cold, frosty and hazy morning.
Eastbound IAIS local rolling long-hood-forward through Grinnell, IA. The locomotive is the Newton Yard switcher and had been switching cars about an hour before. It's pulling a single hopper to an industry on the east side of towo. The time is around 8:30 AM on a very foggy morning.
Twin Cities & Western (ex-Reading & Northern) CF7
St. Croix Valley switching Horizon Mills
A westbound CP mixed freight approaching Pigs Eye Yard, powered by matching Soo Line Geeps
Twin Cities & Western ethanol train on Minnesota Prairie Line (wish I could've caught MPL power before it disappeared from service)
Canadian National SD40-2 no. 5953, an ex–Kansas City Southern unit still in its predecessor’s blue and yellow paint, leads a northbound mixed freight toward Ashland on the former Soo Line Ashland Subdivision. The consist includes mostly empty pulpwood flats, along with a few boxcars and tank cars, typical of the light forest-products traffic still moving over the line at the time. Photographed on a hot Independence Day afternoon, this train represents one of the final recorded revenue movements north of Park Falls before service was suspended following severe washouts in the July 2016 floods.
BC Rail unit leading CN mixed freight on DW&P south of International Falls, MN
Eastbound DME and CSX power west of the Waseca yard.
Got this as a bonus on my way to Tracy, MN to shoot the RCP&E
The train was idling with no crew in sight. They may have gone to beans or the train may be waiting for a CP crew to take it east.
Northbound into the former Rock Island yard on a drizzly Saturday morning. I believe this is a transfer drag from the CRANDIC - mostly covered hoppers (likely empty).
Penn Central piggy-back trailer parked next to ex-SOO's Ashland-Prentice line.
MNNR #75 idles under the sandtower on Christmas Eve
Former TCWR unit
Another shot of the old horse (the old TC&W logo is barely visible under the maroon paint-out)
Power for the St. Paul Turn idling at Hopkins (former MILW depot)
PGR power tied-up over the weekend on former MILW/ROCK joint trackage. PGR built a small station-like office there as the on-duty location for crews.

The crew have brought their train into New Brighton Yard and are preparing to run-around to head back south
Wisconsin Northern #1500 sleeps on a siding in Bloomer
Westbound CP unit train with 4 Class-1 railroads represented (CP, UP, CSX, BNSF)
TC&W mixed freight arriving in Hector, MN to do a pick-up.
Engines running light westward to do their switching in town on a beautiful autumn day.
The WSOR Horicon-Oshkosh turn arrived in the morning. I finally tracked it down in the afternoon and found the crew was gone (lunch?). I had to climb through marsh grass to get the shot, but it was worth the trouble. The WSOR has always been tough for me to catch outside their yards.

CPKC pusher unit on an eastbound mixed freight going into the siding at Loretto, MN.
CPKC empty unit oil train westbound. It will meet a CPKC mixed train at Loretto in a few minutes.
Lead unit of a CN local at Barron.
CN local eastbound out of Barron slows to switch an LP business on the former Soo Line main. This was a great start to a fun train hunt.
CN has maintained the ex-Soo (later WC) depot in Prentice very nicely. This shot faces southeast.
Another view of the CN, ex-WC, ex-Soo Line depot, this time facing southwest.
The FOXY eastbound job has arrived at the little former Soo Line yard in Bradley. He has cut-off from his train and is headed into Tomahawk for a pick-up (presumably at the container plant).
A leased unit operated by the FOXY Rwy rests with a former WSOR locomotive.
A leased unit, still in the beautiful WSOR livery, rests after a day's work on the FOXY Rwy in Bradley, Wis. This was quite the happy surprise for me, as I never expected to see those wonderful WSOR colors in that location.
I noticed this safety advisory on a yard building in the former Soo Line facility at Bradley, Wis. I believe there was a depot in Bradley that is long gone, but the small MOW structure with this sign remains in use.
The plant switcher for Johnson Timber rests on the former CNW after hauling a cut of cars to the CN interchange this morning.
The Johnson Timber switcher is heading southwest on the former CNW to the CN interchange with a short cut of cars.
A now rare high-nose Geep still serves a local industry in New Ulm, located northwest of the old CNW depot in town.
Tomahawk Railway switching their little yard in perfect lighting conditions.

The St. Croix Valley southbound job rolling along the former Northern Pacific, with cars likely from the BNSF interchange at Hinckley.
