A nice fall trip with a few surprises... Note: 5/3/2013 - These 2 Lackawanna units are now being rebuilt for service at Saratoga Springs, NY. I will update this as I find out more!
Ethanol heading east thru Herkimer
Clearing driftwood from along the tracks which run parallel to the Erie Canal
Running behind a few trees and in front of some kind of old concrete structure, this train is passing under a very old NYC signal bridge
Too bad it was cloudy, because these colors were incredible!
On River Road in East Creek, this old relic still proudly displays its long heritage
Waited here for over an hour, but nothing came thru. Had to continue with the trip, but loved this spot.
From the bridge at Nelliston Station, this was a pretty shot.
About to hit the "famous" Nelliston Detector. "CSX Equipment defect detector - Milepost 200.7 - Track 2 - No Defects, N0 defects - Total axles 286 - Speed 38." Gotta love it!
Anyone who regularly listens to the CSX Mohawk scanner feed knows this detector by heart!
I ended up chasing this train all the way to Selkirk. From PB to Selkirk is a lot of open road and easy chasing.
It was a false signal, and once they got it fixed, the train powered up and headed east.
This gorgeous spot is right along the Mohawk River at a place called "The Nose".
This spot was my favorite. Along with beautiful scenery, a river, and a train, there was also the most unusual purple rock crystals all thru this rock outcrop I was standing on...
Caught this one as it wizzed thru Fonda. The speed difference between the freights and Amtrak is amazing!
Construction activity is wrapping up on this newly rebuilt bridge as our EB freight passes over.
New bridge, with fall colors behind and a nice CSX engine make a lot of color pop in this shot
Looks like NS brought some cars to switch with Pan Am at RJ. This is the east end of the yard, The west end was even busier.
Alot happening here. As a csx train passes by, a single UP engine moves some reefers into the yard to the left, and a string of 4 MEC (Pan AM) engines moves a line of reefer cars toward the CSX main.
A beautiful fall setting as a westbound autorack comes off the Fuller crossover bridge
This was one long autorack train. It is about to pass under the long abandoned State Road bridge, and meet up with the lower track.
I went nuts when I saw these units in Selkirk. I had heard that in Early October, SLRG, the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad had purchased these 2 FINE units from the NYRHA in Syracuse. They are being delivered to Saratoga Springs and being put into service ASAP! I hope they dont change the paint. It will be very nice to see these 2 units back in revenue service again. I understand they both work. As a footnote, SLRG also purchased 2 former NYSW F-9s from Larrys truck and Electric as well as a former Burlington Northern F-9 that was also there. They are all being brought over to Saratoga for rebuilds. This will one day be some operation!!!
This train paused at the signal for a few minutes, then headed on the bypass track to the east end where it dropped the empty hoppers.
They look like toys next to the CSX big engines. How cool was this catch???
This was over a mile and a half of empty ballast hoppers
This was a thru grain train that used the runaround and came over to the eastbound tracks. Not a common move.
A former NJ Transit passenger car, full of CSX employees in green vests, is being pulled around the yard by a slug and a remote controlled yard engine. Maybe training?? or a yard tour?? Your guess is as good as mine...
Some CSX yard workers pose in front of the old DLW engines for some nostalgia shots. Wish I was there....
