CP Binghamton south

The first train with CP power was an acid train from Montreal to Baltimore, here seen just after leaving East Binghamton yard, approaching Shaw Rd in Conklin. Consist was the three CP SDs and 42 loads of sulfuric acid, with two idlers at each end.

BT 2, now a CP job, works at Taylor in the fog. Despite the haze, other units in the yard are still apparent, including one of the D&H C424 rebuilds.

Train 556 rolls under the NY 7 overpass in Conklin, just minutes into its trip to a CSX connection at Park Jct in Philadelphia.

A big 555 rolls north at Hop Bottom, today with 108 cars behind its four up front, and two more behind.

Most trains were not heavy enough to get pushers out of Scranton, and practice was to put the tonnage on and drag it up to Clarks Summit with the road power. Still, some trains got helpers, such as this 555. They would stay on all the way to Binghamton.

CP 557 rolls north along the Susquehanna seen from the bridge connecting Conklin to kirkwood. Todays train has a decent 24 cars.

The going away shot of 557 from the Conklin Kirlwood overpass. The train will be in East Binghamton in about five minutes. It will set off cars for 553 to Montreal, make a crew change, and head out the Tier for Toronto.

Train 555, the former PYRP, rolls north at Nicholson. Three NS units trail the GATX leaser, typical for this train south of Binghamton, with 101 cars. The train will be worked at Binghamton, and CP power will take it to St Luc.

The ex DLW line now operated by CP runs close to the Susquehanna through parts of Conklin. One good spot is where it crosses under the bridge from Kirkwood at the south end of Broome Corporate Park, where this photo was taken. In the winter it gives a good shot of a train here, in this case, 558 with a pair of SDs and 38 cars.

CP 5657 leads a southbound under the PA 706 bridge at New Milford. Hard to believe there were once two tracks here.

DLW built this in 1915 to span the Tunkhannock Creek valley after rejecting a fill at this location. Its massive, and still the largest steel reinfoced concrete structure in the world. In some ways its hard to shoot a train here, as the bridge dwarfs anything on it-not that I wont try!! Heres 164 going across.

412 south of Binghamton gets NS power en route to Enola and eventually Linwood NC. Here we see it passing the station site at Hop Bottom.

Local D 11 rolls south at Summerville on a typically beautiful day in northern PA. At least there was good power leading. This location is now the north end of a#two mile siding.

This scene is notable not so much for the CN wide cab SD40, though they were becoming rare by this time, as it is for the CP SW1200. There were two assigned to Binghamton, and they were only there for a short time. Here 41T passes one as it enters Conklin yard from the south.

Train 412 is out of the yard and on its way south, now rolling through Stillwater, soon to cross the state line into PA.

Actually, the old DLW station here collapsed and was ultimately razed. It sat just to the left of the train, now just a bare spot. In another minute, it the train will pass the north end of Hop Bottom.

412 was another one of those trains you never knew what the power would be. South of Binghamton it ran with NS power, sometimes run through units from the west. Heres a UP unit trailing at New Milford

Train 166 rolls south across the Martins Creek Viaduct just south of Kingsley with a monster 150 car train. In ten minutes, it will be crossing this bridges bigger cousin, Tunkhannock Viaduct, at Nicholson.

Train 166 rolls south near Hallstead on the ex DLW. Note the yellow sign pointing off to the left. The D&H used these to indicate an upcoming grade crossing or other obstruction, the purpose being to warn plow operators to raise the plow blade to avoid damage to the plow(and a possible derailment) or to track structures. These are all over the D&H proper, and now on the ex DLW too, though this one has probably been there 20 years by now.

13T rolls down the main at Hop Bottom on the former DLW cut off.

NS 13T rolls south at Hop Bottom, its 70 cars entrusted to a standard cab C40-8, a widecab C40, and a GP 38. You never knew what would show on this train.

Theres nothing for 13T to meet today, so it holds the main as it rolls its 49 cars through CPF 648 at Hop Bottom.

13T heads south on the DLW cutoff over "baby Tunkhannock", about 8 miles north of the big bridge.

There is a good across the field shot at Summerville, between Hallstead and New Milford, that is a good view in the afternoon. Today we caught 13T there, with a standard cab C40 and an SD 60, a nice change from the onslaught of widecabs.

CP developed some good stack traffic to Oak Island and Philadelphia in the 1990s, and carried it into the new millenium. Here we see train 164 rolling south through New Milford PA on the former Lackawanna behind CPs ubiquitous(even at this date) SD40-2s

Train 164 is now clear of the Binghamton terminal, and getting a move on southbound. We see him along the local road that becomes NY 7A when it crosses into NY. Here, its just another rough road in PA. Hopefully the 164 has a smoother ride than I will.

NS 41T rolls through Conklin, about to enter CPs East Binghamton yard. It will roll through to a crew change at QD, then run the Tier to Buffalo and a CN connection. CN power handles the train, as it does most days.

Train 410 rolls south through the snowy Pennsylvania countryside where EL freights, the Lake Cities and the Phoebe Snow once trod.

CP train 412 was a run through to NS at Enola, eventually terminating at Salisbury NC, and usually got NS power for its morning departure out of Binghamton. Here we see it rolling 85 cars just south of Hallstead where the tracks come up next to US 11, seen at the right.

NS 8930 leads an extra section of 30T, symbolled X0T, south into the late winter sun with 77 cars.

Coal did not often move south over the CP, especially not with CP power. Here we see a southbound 8859 train entering the siding at Hop Bottom

An 8859 empty coal train rolls across Martins Creek Viaduct behind a CP SD 40-2 and a pair of Guilford units as the late afternoon sun lights up the bridge. This was quite unusual, in that Guilford power rarely ran south of Binghamton, and coal trains almost always had NS power.

31T rolls north at Hop Bottom behind an NS leader, not the usual power for this train. He'll meet 30T here.

NS train 31T ran on CP from Dupont to Binghamton, then west on the Tier. We see it with a foursome of CN units on Martins Creek Viaduct, 30 minutes out of Binghamton.
