Some backlogged slides I have just recently scanned, photographers (when known) are annotated.
This unit made its way to plenty of shortlines over the years, including the Pinebelt Southern and Wiregrass Central. But its shortline legacy all started here on the Columbia & Silver Creek in the late 1980s.
Original Wiregrass Central power in the classic G&O paint scheme. This was shortly after startup, note the borrowed CSX power - a common occurance in the first year or so after the line started operation.
In 1990, a GP40 was big power for a tiny shortline in rural Alabama. Here we see 3023 after a fresh coat of paint. Unfortunately the life of this locomotive was considerably short on the G&O. After a brief stint on the Wiregrass Central and a some mechanical and electric issues, she went to Florida to receive some rework. She made one final apperance for the startup of the Altantic & Gulf shortline in Georgia before being sold off. From what I understand this locomotive lives on and serves another shortline in Ohio.
Northbound Carolina Piedmont local heads through Fountain Inn. Hard to believe this scene was recorded 22 years ago! I drive through here daily and much has changed.
A military train passes by just outside of Richland. These rails are now long abandoned.
This particular unit made its way to nearly every G&O property and dawned quite a few different logos over the years. Here it serves the Wiregrass Central in the early 1990s.
Although most G&O subsidiaries had a plethora of GP10s, this was the only such unit to make its way to the Wiregrass Central. In this photo 8056 has just recieved a fresh coat of paint, however it would remain plain and without logos or the iconic G&O bold side numbers for the remainder of its time on the Wiregrass Central. To the best of my knowledge, this locomotive was eventually scrapped not too far from where it is parked in this photo.
