BAR BL2 56, location unknown, June 1974, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1949 as #556 (c/n 8616), it is one of 59 of this model built (including the BL-1 demonstrator, later rebuilt to BL-2), one of eight on the BAR roster. It was powered by a 16-cylinder Model 567B prime mover, and some were built with steam generators, evidenced by an exhaust stack which was positioned between the two windshield panes up against the center post dividing them. At the time of its construction, Alco dominated the road switcher market with its RS-1 and sucessor RS-2, and EMD needed something with which to compete. This locomotive was the predecessor to the GP-7.

Boston & Maine Railroad S4M 1274 at South Portland, Maine on an unknown day in May 1980, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1274 was built by Alco in September 1950 as model S3 1174 (c/n 78319). It suffered fire damage and was rebuilt to a model S4 in November 1957 and renumber 1274. It appears that 1274 went to the University of Minnesota and was lettered FW1 for Foster Wheeler, the contract operator of the coal plant.

Number 6306 was built by Budd, completed February 27, 1958 (c/n 6820), becoming MBTA 6306 in 1975, rebuilt by Morrison - Knudsen to MBTA Control Car 430 in 1982. The Boise Budds (as the rebuilt cars were known) were unpopular with passengers, as the rebuilders had removed the sound- deadening rubber pads from the trucks, leaving the cars noisy and rough-riding. In the early 1990s, they were sold to Virginia Rail Express for service out of Washington, DC. When VRE bought new equipment, the ex-RDCs moved further. Some now serve Dallas Area Rapid Transit, some the Grand Canyon Railroad. The B&M RDC3 units were in 6300 - 6306 number series, Numbers 6303 - 6306 were built without a baggage section, and the baggage door was sealed. The entire forward section was devoted to the Railway Post Office.
