CB&Q E9 9992
Title:  CB&Q E9 9992
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9992 backing into the station at Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 5, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I have the slide labeled as Train 21, the Morning Zephyr. If that is correct, then this train is arriving at St. Paul. Train 21 left Chicago at 8:00 AM CST every day, arriving at St. Paul at 2:25 PM. This locomotive became BN 9992 on March 2, 1970. Around May 1973, 9992 was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in Boise Idaho, the 12-cylinder Model 567 prime movers were replaced with 12-cylinder Model 645's, the steam generators were replaced with twin Cummins 350Kw generators for Head End Power (HEP), and it returned to BN rails now owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District as E9-Au 9922, and was leased back to the BN. It ran in commuter service until July 1992.

CGW F3 113C
Title:  CGW F3 113C
Description:  Chicago Great Western Railway F3 113C in Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 5, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5990) on EMD Order E963A, it retained the CGW road number for a few years after the July 1968 merger, renumbered to 213 in 1971, retired, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding (Madison, Illinois) in June 1985. Some folks refer to this as a model F5, however, EMD considered it an F3, built with F3 components in the latest carbody refinement which carried over to the first production F7's. It was equipped with upgraded traction motors (D27B), thus setting it apart from earlier F3's.

CRI&P E8 655
Title:  CRI&P E8 655
Description:  CRI&P E8 655, Saint Paul, Minnesota, February 5, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during March 1952 (c/n 15202) on EMD Order 2047A. It is seen here at Saint Paul Union Depot, having cut off its train, the three baggage cars have been removed. I have a shot of this train arriving, and have labeled the slide "Zephyr - Rocket". That being the case, this locomotive brought in the daily Train #15-201-20 from Saint Louis, Missouri. This was a train jointly operated by the Rock Island and the CB&Q between Minneapolis and Saint Louis, with both railroads supplying power and rolling stock. The first run was on January 7, 1941, and it was discontinued on April 8, 1967. The Zephyr - Rocket ran on Rock Island rails between the Twin Cities and Burlington, Iowa (365.6 miles) and on CB&Q rails between Burlington and Saint Louis (221 miles).

Description:  CRI&P E8 655, Saint Paul, Minnesota, February 5, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is Train 15-201-20, the Zephyr - Rocket, arriving at Saint Paul Union Depot. The switch tender will line the train for a reverse movement into the stub end depot. This train departed daily from Saint Louis, Missouri, at 5:45 PM CST for an overnight run to the Twin Cities as Train 15 on the CB&Q. Upon arrival at Burlington, Iowa at 11:20 PM, it was turned over to the Rock Island, becoming Train 201. I'm not certain where it became Train 20. According to the June 1965 issue of The Official Guide, it spent about 10 minutes at Manly, Iowa, but that might have been for a crew change. It arrived at Saint Paul at 7:55 AM, if it was on time.

GN 122 and the 3rd street NP switch tender
Title:  GN 122 and the 3rd street NP switch tender
Description:  Perhaps the 3rd street NP switch tender is lining switches for this Great Northern transfer that is coming down the hill from Westminister Tower--- the real question here is where are they going and with whom will they be interchanging cars today?! This is just north of the NP commissary and coach yard on the north end of the "St Paul wye". Maybe they are going thru the St Paul Union Depot (which had 23 tracks &was shared by 8 different railroads) and over the Mississippi River drawbridge at Robert Street and then to the Chicago Great Western at State street or maybe to "the Omaha" at the NSP high bridge power plant! I would like to believe that they will be going east to Division Street on the CB&Q and then to Hoffman Avenue on the Milwaukee Road at St Paul Yard! There is perhaps no way to know--- the real point here is that in those days there were many different railroads and lots of different jobs and places to work unlike today!

Great Northern ore train at Minneapolis MN Union Yard in 1967.
Title:  Great Northern ore train at Minneapolis MN Union Yard in 1967.
Description:  The Great Northern ran a few ore trains from the mines in Northern MN near Duluth down to Minneapolis MN and then transfered the trains to the CB&Q in St Paul MN. The CB&Q would run them to Chicago. Most of the GN ore was sent to ore docks near Duluth by ore boat. The BNSF still runs a few direct ore trains from Duluth to Chicago by rail. GN Union Yard in Mpls MN near the University of MN was their main yard on the east end of the System. It was as big as Northtown yard at one time. The CNW and CGW had large yards here also.
