Interesting early photo by Dick Rumbolz of ex-Indiana RR #375 as a Chicago South Shore & South Bend coach car convert. Some 15 years later photos show it as having been converted into a baggage car marked "Fast Emergency Package Service".

Looking sharp in the noonday sun back in 1949 is CSS "Little Joe" #803 sitting in the Michigan City yard. No photographer was listed.

Sitting just east of the Michigan City shops area is Chicago South Shore & South Bend interurban #32. Built by Standard Steel Co in 1929 before the merger with Pullman a few years later, this car was part of a fleet that served the Chicago to northwest Indiana region for nearly 30+ years. Good looking EP-4 type locomotive taken at the CSS Michigan City Shops. Built by GE io 1949 for failed sale to Russia, this "Little Joe" loco worked freight throughout the South Shore line. Eventually retired, it was sold to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL where iu has been restored to beautiful condition. John Brinkmann photo

Beautiful sepia photo (left untouched) of two 1926 Pullman built interurban cars that was the backbone of the line before the newer Nippon Sharyo appeared in 1982. Built by Pullman in 1926 as a coach/baggage combo interurban, this unit is rolling away from the Carroll Avenue station next to the CSS shops and yard in Michigan City. It is reported that the unit was scrapped. The slide came from the Houser collection.

This is an interested trio of Chicago, South Shore & South Bend items caught at the Michigan City Shops area. To the left corner is CSS interurban #26, one of the Pullman cars built in 1926. In the center of the photo is CSS freight motor #901. This electric steeplecab was built by Baldwin/Westinghouse in 1929 as IC #10001. The CSS acquaired it in 1941. Finally to the the far right is CSS maintenance of way line car #1100 rebuilt from an indiana Railroad interurban car. This is a photo from the orignal negative that Lawrence H. Boehning took over 67 years ago!

To the far right is Chicago, South Shore & South Bend express baggage car with the slogan "Fast Emergency Package Service". It was built by St. Louis Car in 1926 as Indiana Railroad combine #375 but later picked up and converted by the CSS shops into the baggage car. Strangely, it now resides as a static display under shelter in Scottsburg, IN. This southern Indiana city is far from the car's original CSS home. To the left of it is CSS interurban #33. This is a scan I did from Lawrence H. Boehning's original negative.

Here is a close up of CSS interurban car #35 that was displayed on the the 1960 Christams card. It appears that the photo was taken earlier in the year, possibly June since the background trees are fully leafed out. No photo credit was listed.

Originally built by EMD in March of 1940 for Buffalo Creek Rwy, it landed on the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend roster where it helped shuffle cars in the Michigan City shops yard. Eventually it was sold to thee Columbus & Greenville Rwy as their #514. Disposition of this unit is unknown after the plant it was working in closed in 1987. Unknown photographer took the color slide.

Ex-NYC #340 heads up what appears to be a fan trip. Built by Alco and delivered to the NYC as #340 in June of 1931, it was transferred to the Chicago South Shore electrified line in the mid-1950's. No exact date or photographer was listed for this photo so an approximate date was used.

Boxcab Engine

Chicago, South Shore & South Bend R-2 boxcabs #704 and 703 run a freight string east near Michigan City circa 1963. #704 was former NYC #343 while #703 was former NYC #303 both acquired in the late 1950's. No photographer was listed for the original b&w negative that this print came from.

Looks like a former NYC boxcab sitting on the Chicago South Shore property in 1963 might be the next Alco-GE unit to take to the CSS roster like its 7 other sisters like #308, #314 and #340-43. No photographer listed.

A good photo of #802 sitting in the Michigan City yard between runs. #802 now resides in the Lake Shore Rwy Museum in North East, PA, not far from the GE plant in Erie, PA that built it. No photographer was listed.

It had an insulated, probably raisable, platform to stand on to repair the overhead wire. It was both highway and rail capable. T. A. Ooons wrote me: "Thanks for posting the photo of the CSSSB line car 50. It is a 1937 Evans Autorailer from the Arlington and Fairfax trolley line in Northern Virginia. Thly ran there from 1937 through 1939. The Vienna destination sign can still be read. The Washington and Old Dominion later used one as a line car with a different platfoOm arrangement.
