Description:
Fine example of the quality work that the Norfolk & Western Roanoke shops produced. This "Mountain-type" 4-8-2 was built by them in June of 1916 as part of the K1 class. The class lasted until the end of steam came for the NW - between 1957-58. Robert P. Morris photo credit.

WM 2-8-0 #722 - Western Maryland
Description:
This good looking 2-8-0 Consolidation type steam locomoitve was built by Alco-Richmond in October ofr 1911. During its service, it had a pwer reverse appled in September of 1933. By June of 1951 after 40 years of service, the loco was sold for scrap to Southwest Steel. . Specs - class H-7a, 60" drivers, superheated, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x30" cylinders, engine weight of 241,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,125 lb.No date, location or photographer listed for the photo.

Description:
WM #914 is an excellent example of the first order for Mallets that Lima ever built back in 1915. This and subsequent orders established Lima as a important locomotive builder in league with Baldwin and Alco. Specifics - L1 class, 52" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" high pressure cylinders, 40x30" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 506,500 lb,impressive tractive effort of 97,877 lb. BO 2-6-6-4 #7702 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Unfortunately, the RRPA data base does not have an option for the 2-6-6-4 wheel config from Baldwin. This loco was built by Baldwin in 1934 as Seaboard Air Line #2502. It was then sold to the B&O in August of 1947 and renumbered BO 7702 as seen here later. The loco lasted only 6 more years on the roster before being sold for scrap in March of 1953. Specs - 69" drivers, impressive 230 psi boiler pressure, four sets of 22x30" cylinders, massive engine weight of 480,000 lb, tractive effort of 82,000 lb. No exact date or photographer was listed for the photo.

PRR 2-8-2 #180 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:
PRR's own Juniata Shops built this loco in November of 1917 as PRR 2-8-2 Mikado #180 (Junianta serial # 347, L1s class). The loco was one of the longer lasting Mikados in the L1s class having made it to February of 1960 before being scrapped after nearly 43 years of dedicated service. Specs - 63" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine wt of 315,000 lb and tractive force of 61,465 lb. This is an Elroy Giffin photo.

PRR 21-8-2 #546 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:
With steam swirling around the engine and a full tender of coal, Pennsylvanai 2-8-2 Mikado #546 is waiting in the Hagerstown, PA yard for its next assignment. Built by the PRR's own Juniata Shops June of 1916 (Juniata serial #3084, L1s class), the loco was a vital component in the massive PRR roster. It lasted for nearly 43 years before being scrapped in October of 1959 Specs - 63" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine wt of 315,000 lb and tractive force of 61,465 lb. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1343, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1916 and retired in April of 1958 after 42 years of faithful service.

Hagerstown. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Richard R. Wallin that was taken near Hagerstown, Maryland, c. 1957. Show here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9625 and two more "AF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9626 was constructed in November of 1951 and retired in January of 1967 after just 16 years of revenue service. The number of the N-6B cabin car at the left is not recorded. ("PrrFan18n")
