KCS 4-6-2 #803 - "The Flying Crow", Kansas City Southern
Title:  KCS 4-6-2 #803 - "The Flying Crow", Kansas City Southern
Description:  An unknown photographer captured this 1912 built Alco-Schenectady Pacific-type loco hauling a long string of varnish on this day. It had tall 75" drivers to handle the passenger speeds and could generate a repectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 24"x28" cylinders. It had an engine weight of 258,000 lb and produced a tractive effort of 36, 557, On the back of the photo was written -"Flying Crow" arriving Kansas City", SteamLocomotive.com explains that some of these engines had tuned air horns that emitted a crow's caw, which heralded the approach of the passenger varnish known as the "Flying Crow". On this service, they sported gold trim, lettering, and an emblem on the tender. The date is an approximation.

Description:  Poor quality photo of the unique 1937 EMC built TA model for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific as it sits is the train shed area of the Kansas City Union Station, MO. Six streamlined TA models were built solely for the Rock Island. The locomotives were powered by a 1200 hp Winton 201-A V16 engine. The loco was constructed as a crbody truss instead of the separate chassis to save weight and headed up a 3 or 4 car semi-articulated trainset built by the Budd Co. The 6 TA locomotives were retired between 1957-58 and all were scrapped. The date is approximate and no photographer's name was listed for the photo.

SLSF 4-6-4 #1065 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Title:  SLSF 4-6-4 #1065 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Description:  Here is another 4-6-4 Hudson that started out as a 1917 Baldwin built SLSF 4-6-2 #1065. The West Springfield Shops rebuilt the loco in 1937 to SLSF 4-6-4 1065. A cosmetic update featured a wide valence above the running gear on both sides that had "The Frisco Lines" enclosed in a long red diamond. Its tender was also emblazoned with similar livery, except that the red diamond embraced the engine's number. Later it would be removed as the loco aged. The scrapper's torch took care of this loco in January of 1952 Hudson.specs - serial #45511, 74" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 26x28" cylinders, engine weight of 360,960 lb, tractive effort of 48,919 lb. Screaming Eagles
Title:  Screaming Eagles
Description:  The MoPac is certainly feeling extra patriotic in this scene, since it takes place during WW2. You can see the long lines of tank cars in the background behind Ex-Wabash MoPoc 1718. Shame not MoPac steam engines were preserved.

Title:  CBQ 0-6-0 #562 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Description:  Another fine example of a 1906 Baldwin built switcher, class G10. According to the Burlington Route Historical Society records, it was assigned to the St Joseph yard in 1935 and later in 1952 to the Galesburg yard. This photo appears to be between those two dates hence the arbitrary date used. In June of 1954, it met its end when it was sold for scrap. C.C. Grayson photo
