One of 34 SD45s built for the Erie Lackawanna. Finished in 1967, this engine would only serve nine years on the railroad before it was merged into Conrail.

The rather typical exterior of this EL unit hides the fact that this was one of the first 20 cylinder turbo-charged engines ever built for locomotives overcoming several technical hurdles. Often overlooked as an average diesel, it now resides at the National Museum of Transportation.

While in St. Louis, I visited the Museum of Transportation. Lots of very interesting equipment, this is one of the more colorful locomotives.
