With all 20 cylinders pounding, monster SDP45 6695 (ex-EL 3664) leads a U-25B(in the CR 2600-2685 series) with mixed freight through Spruce Creek, PA in November, 1980. This unusual pairing coupled the SDP-45s 3,600hp with the older U25Bs 2,500hp.
CR SDP45 6695 showing that unfortunate notch in the Fireman's side of the low hood for the brakewheel as it approaches Union Avenue interlocking in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built for the Erie Lackawanna as number 3664 in August 1970 (c/n 36882) on EMD Order 7246, it was classed as a SDP45, but was never equipped with a steam generator at the rear. The EL wanted a larger (5000 gallon) fuel tank, so EMD supplied a SDP45 frame and hood, although the rear end was beveled rather than flat. The spotting feature is the lack of vents for the steam generator section behind the flaired radiators.
