Spoor, the Burlington purchased its first covered hoppers from an outside builder when it received 30 Pullman-Standard PS-2 covered hoppers in 1954. Numbered 85000-85029 and designated HC-2, they were rated at 70-ton capacity and 2893 cubic feet. In 1965, cars 85015-85029 were overhauled at Havelock, given new 100-ton capacity Barber S-2-A roller bearing trucks and renumbered 85050-85064.

This series of cars were equipped with eight square loading hatches on the roof, four Enterprise gravity discharge gates, and National Type-B trucks with a five foot, six inch wheelbase. The trucks were classed as No. 70 on the CB&Q, not to be confused with the No. 72 truck (also National Type-B, but a five foot, eight inch wheelbase), which was used on the next batch of HC-1's (#'s 180200-180249), built in 1943 at Havelock, Nebraska.

This car was one of 350 Class IC-1B cars built by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops in 1958, number series 181500 - 181899. In the late 1960's the CB&Q overhauled 450 aging Class HC-1 cars built bbtween 1943 and 1951. With the Burlington Northern merger imminent, 250 cars rebuilt in 1969 featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted!an all-caps BURLINGTON for the previous upper and lower case Burlington at the upper left side of the car. All lettering was red, and space was left for the word NORTHERN, to"be added once the merger was consummated, but that was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering font employed by the Q on all its per-merger painued cars did not match the Helvetica font ultimately used by the BN.
