Number 4978 was built by Baldwin in September 1923 (c/n 56974) and donated to the City of Mendota for display in 1965.

Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4978
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4978 and Colorado & Southern 2-8-2 Class O-4 807 at Denver, Colorado on October 22, 1958, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4978 was built by Baldwin in September 19234 (c/n 56974), retired and donated to the city of Mendota in 1965. Number 807 was built by Baldwin in March 1919 as a USRA design heavy 2-8-2 and assigned CB&Q road number 5508 (c/n 51615) classed as O-4. It was sold to the C&S in 1957, renumbered 807, retired and sold for scrap in December 1960.

CB&Q SW1 9140
Title:  CB&Q SW1 9140
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SW1 9140 and 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4978 at Eola, Illinois on May 22, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 4978 was cosmetically restored and donated to Mendota, Illinois for static display. Before it was presented to Mendota, it arrived in Eola for final preparation. It was shoved onto the turntable by GP7 226 (in the background) and pulled into the roundhouse by SW1 9140. There wasn't enough room on the turntable for two locomotives, so 9140 spent the evening in the roundhouse coupled to 4978. In the morning, the procedure was reversed, with 4978 given its last ride on a turntable. It will need to be turned around for its final display position facing west.

Description:  This class O1a Mikado is the centerpiece of the small but well-maintained railroad museum based out of the Mendota Amtrak station. All the connecting rods and valve gear are intact too, instead of being torched off like so many locomotives.
