CNJ 4-6-0 #608 - Central RR of New Jersey
Title:  CNJ 4-6-0 #608 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  Built by Alco-Brooks in 1902, this class of camelbacks were designed with some attention to the fireman's position. According to Steamlocomotive.com,""Sinclair pays particular attention to the fireman's position in this class of camelbacks. He explains that a lot of the discomfort and peril of coal-heaving in a double-cab came from requiring the fireman to work from the tender, or worse, straddle the footplate-tender junction just a couple of feet above the rails. In this engine the "coal digger" is placed "on deck" which offered the advantage that "...with all the motion of the engine, the fireman and firehole door maintain the same relative position to each other all the time." As a result, the man moved coal over a shorter distance and at a lower height and would have a truer aim at the door. Another amenity was that the fireman was housed in a complete cab that could be fitted with "curtains over the doors that would make [him] decidedly snug, and furthermore, he can't fall out."' Date and location were not given. No photographer listed.

CNJ 4-8-0C #479 - Central RR of New Jersey
Title:  CNJ 4-8-0C #479 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  Originally numbered 469, this Alco-Brooks camelback built in 1901 was renumbered in 1903 to 479. Rebuilt in 1919 to class K1, rebuilt again in January 1924 at Elizabethport to class K1as, reclassed in 1945 to TW40. The scan was left in its sepia tones as conversion to black/white caused a loss of details in this original photo. Thanks to a comment from Daniel Pagdon about the CNJ nickname for this wheel configuration, "Mastodon", it seems very appropriate! No date or location were given for this photo and no photographer was listed.

CNJ 0-6-0 #25 Camelback - Central of New Jersey RR
Title:  CNJ 0-6-0 #25 Camelback - Central of New Jersey RR
Description:  Here's a typical yard switcher and crew at work in an unidentified location. Built by the CNJ shops in 1910, the camelback arrangement was a unique solution in the steam engine development. Now it looks like a strange "bird" but I find it interesting and actually pretty in a "Beauty-and-the-Beast" sort of way! Update - thanks to the comment by Daniel Pagdon (see below), I have changed the unknown location to the Elizabethport yards.

Title:  CNJ 0-6-0C #1 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  This appears to be the first 0-6-0 camelback switchers built for the Central RR of New Jersey. This one was a 1901 Brooks example of the ugly-cute switcher that was common working the Communipaw yards. Some of these lasted into the early 1950's before being retired. Robert P. Central Rail Road of New Jersey 0-6-0 #38
Title:  Central Rail Road of New Jersey 0-6-0 #38
Description:  A rare camelback switcher sits idle in the Elizabethport yard on this clear December day. Buit by the CNJ in 1912 as a B4 class switcher, it serves as an evolutionary step in locomotive construction. Somehow this engine looks cute, almost toylike is some ways and must have been a partial inspiration to the Lionel Corporation early steeple models. Photo credit goes to Milt Ward.

Description:  In this recent reprint of an older negative, this camelback ten wheeler built by Baldwin in 1913-14 sits in the Elizabethport yard waiting for the supplies and passengers to be loaded. It was a class L-7as with 69" drivers and developed a 210 psi boiler pressure for its 23"x28" cylinders. The engine tipped the scales at 225,600 lb and it could apply a tractive effort of 38,318 lb. CNJ 4-8-0C #469 - Central RR of New Jersey
Title:  CNJ 4-8-0C #469 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  As camelback locomotives go, this was a brute but was well suited to the hilly CNJ landscape while hauling coal. Built by Brooks (Alco) in 1900, it was well suited to burn the anthracite fuel in its wide Wooten firebox (123" long by 97" wide) which needed two firemen to stoke its hungry mouth. CNJ renumbered their class so this was actually built at #454. More than half retired before WWII with the last of the class scrapped in 1948 (#465). Specs - K-1 class, 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x32" cylinders, engine weight of 201,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,619 lb. Rebuilt and superheated by the CNJ shops at Elizabethport in March 1917 to class K1s and rebuilt to class K1as at Ashley in November 1924. The photo is from the Bob Lorenz collection and the date is approximate.

Title:  CNJ 4-6-0C #751 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:  The fate of this 1902 Baldwin built 4-6-0 camelback seems in question as it sits in what might be a scrap line. He used a Ciroflex "B" camera with 120 size Exx film at 1/50th sec exposure with f/d 50, then used Micro film developer and printed the photo on #3 paper . Only wish he had written his name as well.
