The former Milwaukee Road bridge across the Rock River at Mayville. The line ran to Fond du Lac from Iron Ridge off the original La Crosse and Milwaukee alignment that ran thru Horicon to Portage on it's way to the Mississippi. The line became part of the Wisconsin and Southern when the Milwaukee sold it off and was abandoned north of Mayville by the WSOR. Though it would not be difficult to reinstate the track in town to this bridge and beyond, it is currently truncated at the Seneca (last that I knew of, canning plants seem to change hands often)) canning plant. |

Built in the Milwaukee shops, this old beauty resides with a twin sibling on a spur within the confines of the closed Wausau Paper, Brokaw plant. The plant was closed in Februaury 2012 as a result of pressue from Starboard Value LP, a holding company which owned (and possibly still does) the largest share of Wausau Paper common stock. Starbord wanted Wausau Paper to get out of print paper business and move into the more profitable tissue industry. Neenah Paper bought some of the brands of print paper from Wausau Paper as they prepared the closure of Brokaw, and is doing well in this field. Starboard Value meanwhile, as of January 2014 was still pressuring Wausau Paper trying to make a quick buck, hoping to increase share value as fast as possible. |

Fox Lake was served by a branch off the La Crosse and Milwaukee line that went from North Milwaukee to La Crosse via Portage from Fox Lake junction, just railroad west of Beaver Dam. The Fox Lake branch was a reverse loop which allowed the trains to town to return to the junction without a reverse or run around move. This old station is on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the local museum. |

The rails between Ripon and Oshkosh were laid in 1875 by the Oshkosh and Mississippi Railwaiy. This right of way was in turn leased to the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul (Milwaukee Road) for an agreement of twenty years. It eventually just became a part of the Milwaukee. This timber trestle is located between Elo and Fisk along this line. The trestle allows a local farmer access to his fields through a fill cutting across the lower area. I am not sure if this trestle was included in the initial construction of the line in 1875, but it obviously predates the large farm equipment in use today. Interestingly, on another road near here, a large culvert was used as a tunnel for livestock to pass under a road between fields. |

This is the where the Milwaukee Road crossed the South Branch of the Manitowoc River on the line between Milwaukee and Channing, MI via Green Bay. The old factory is now occupied by JTD Enterprises and, according to a sign on the facade, Briess, of malting fame, has a presence within. I have not been able to determine the original occupant of the building. |

The bay window was toward the mainline to Green Bay on this former Milwaukee Road depot. A track which branched off south of the building and passed on the west (opposite) side went on to Menasha. In the early 2000's one could find men from the sub's section gang working out of this structure. The building had been refurbished with new windows and doors along with the addition of the garage door on the north end for the maintenance crews. Currently the windows are all boarded up and the building doesn't seem to be used much anymore. At least it is in very good shape, hopefully the CN will not tear this one down. |

The pile of rubble is what is left of the Gilbert Paper production facility in Menasha. Gilbert Paper was closed in 2001 after Mead Corporation sold it to Fox River Paper. The building standing is part of the Banta Printing facility on Doty Island, which was closed after RR Donnelly purchased Banta Corporation. The wooden trestle on the opposite side of the Fox River was the spur upon which the Milwaukee Road spotted boxcars for the Gilbert Paper Company. The cars were actually spotted over water. To get to this trestle, the MILW crossed over the Fox on a bridge from about the location of the camera. The bridge angled across the river to the left from the camera's location and had a switchback to come out onto the Gilbert Paper spur. This area of Menasha was a thriving bed of paper, printing and packaging industry, and had a myriad of rails to serve the businesses. Much of the network still exists, but enough of the industry has disappeared to take a bite out of it. Another spur came to Gilbert Paper from the CNW Neenah yard on the other side of the river. The plant received its coal and chemicals on that spur. The spur still exists, but only goes as far as the old General Chemical (Chem Trade) complex. Gilbert Paper received boxcar loads of pulp material. The pulp material would be sulfite (wood pulp) in bales, usually from Georgia Kraft Mill in Brunswick, GA. They would also receive rags from cotton mills and from the garment factories in the east for the higher grades of paper. Gilbert Paper shipped about 75% of their product by rail. The power house would go through 3 to 4 carloads of coal per day, along with 3 to 4 truck loads. The mill received about 3 tank cars of chlorine per week. The factory was switched twice per day. This information comes from a long time employee (electrical engineer) who retired in the late 1980's, so after that, things may have changed a bit. However, that is how it was for most of his career. |

Milwaukee Way into Oshkosh |
| Description: |
One may wonder what the back of this building has to do with the Milwaukee Road. The photo is taken from the vicinity of the Milwaukee's yard and facilities in Oshkosh looking back toward Ripon. The area where the camera is located once housed a busy freight terminal and a connection with the Soo Line (original Wisconsin Central) where they shared a swing bridge (removed 1990's) across the Fox River. All that remains to tell of the Milwaukee Road right of way into town are these power lines that followed it into town. The track that remains in service from Ripon terminates on the west side of I 41. |

Remains of Milwaukee Road Depot |
| Description: |
Residing between Fenton Street (to the rear of the camera) and Fond du Lac Street, one can find the last remnants of the Milwaukee's station in Ripon. Parts of the foundation can be seen in the gravel parking lot that now occupies the parcel. The right of way has been a part of the Wisconsin and Southern since the Milwaukee sold this line off in the early 1980's. |

Entry to Appleton Across the Fox River |
| Description: |
The Milwaukee Road entered Appleton via a bridge across the Fox River to the industrial "flats" within the confines of the river valley. The line came from Menasha, which was connected to the secondary main between Milwaukee and Green Bay at Hilbert. The bridge piers are all gone, but this abutment remains on the south side of the river. The concrete structure on the left is a pier for the Memorial Drive traffic bridge, which the railroad bridge went under. |

The Waupaca Historical Society is fairly certain that this is the correct number for this Thrall built Milwaukee Road caboose, and the Milwaukee Road Historical Society seems to confirm it, referring to it as 02203 in the 2015 No. 2 Hiawathagram. Which caboose this is took a little investigative work by the historical societies in question due to the fact somebody felt they should have the builders plate, rather than leave it on the caboose for it's owner. |

Escanaba and lake Superior Engine House |
| Description: |
The former Milwaukee Road engine house still stands and is used by the ELS at the old Milwaukee Road yard in Menominee. There is some neat old equipment here, visible from the road. A couple vintage pieces can be seen to the right of the engine house. A newer center beam car can bee seen beyond the left end. |

Looking north along the former Milwaukee Road line at Sauk City into Prairie Du Sac. The vantage point is from across the street, just north of the Milwaukee Road station. Though this line cannot be reached from Mazomanie due to the poor status of the Sauk City railroad bridge, if needed, this area can be accessed via the former CNW Reedsburg line and a connection at the Badger Ammunitions Plant. |

The Milwaukee Road closed its depot that served Sauk City and Paririe Du Sac in 1975. It was situated close to the political border of the two communities in Sauk City. The section of this building on the left, with the lower roof line is the former depot. The other end has been added on since 1975. |
