Album Info:Here is a two-page article entitled "Portage Railroad." It was published originally in the January 1957 issue of "Pennsy" magazine, pages 8-9. No author is specified. "When the PRR built Horseshoe Curve and the Allegheny Tunnel in 1854, it established the first continuous line of rail across Pennsylvania and brought about the abandonment of the Allegheny Portage Railroad ~ a unique transportation system which has sometimes been described as 'the Mother of the Pennsylvania Railroad.'" (Page 8)

Cars were attached to cable at base of plane and hoisted to top by stationary steam power; then horses (later engines) pulled them on level grade to next plane." This model is presently on display at the National Park Service's "Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site" visitor's center in Cresson, Pennsylvania.
