CO 2-8-8-2 #1558 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Title:  CO 2-8-8-2 #1558 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  One of the original 25 built by Alco in 1924, this H-7 class "Chesapeake" type locomotive was able to pull 9,500 ton trains over the 113 mile run from Russell, Kentucky to Columbus, Ohio in 5 hours according to www.steamlocomotive.com. This wheel type soon replaced teh 2-10-4 and the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenies in the territory. A real power monster! Unfortunately no location, date or photographer credit was listed for this photo. Looks like West Virginia or Kentucky from the background.

Title:  CO 4-4-2 #286 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  This 1906 Alco built "Atlantic" type locomotive rolls through Peru, Indiana on this unspecified winter day. Not one of the better designs for the mountainous part of the C&O, it must have worked well in the flatlands of Indiana. Max Miller is credited with the photo. Thirteen of the 20 locos in the group remained in use unitl 1949 - tribute to their abilities. Always like posting photos from my home state!

CO 2-10-4 #3030 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Title:  CO 2-10-4 #3030 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  Beautiful original sepia toned action shot of Chesapeake & Ohio 2-10-4 #3030 doing what it does best - hauling a long drag of coal cars. Built by Lima in 1930, these mighty machines ran from Russell, Kentucky up through Ohio to Toledo for most of their career, a few ending up in eastern Virginia. Meat and potatoes for this mighty class were 160 loaded cars of coal comprising a trailing load of 13,500 tons. Unfortunately, according to one source this class rode roughly and pounded the track to the point that a special gang stood by at the bottom of one long grade to repair the damage. Specs - serial #7546, class T-1, 69" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 29x34" cylinders, massive engine weight of 566,000 lb, impressive tractive effort of 91,584. The class was retired between 1952-53. No date or location given for the photo. B.F. Cutler photo

Description:  Another Hoosier loco! This 1906 Alco-Richmond built 4-4-2 "Atlantic type" locomotive poses next to the elevated gate tower in downtown Hammond, IN. This loco was one of only twenty 4-4-2 Atlantics to ever appear on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. The class was rebuilt in 1920's with reduced boiler pressure but increased cylinder size. Net effect was the tractive effort remained largely the same. Happy to be able to post a C&O loco serving my Hoosier state!Arthur B. Johnson photo

CO 4-6-4 #491
Title:  CO 4-6-4 #491
Description:  Fine example of the craftsmanship of the C&O shops in 1947. The loco was originally built by Alco-Richmond in 1926 as a 4-6-2 but rebuilt by the C&O shops in 1947 as a streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson with a new classification of L-1. IMHO, one of the finest streamlined steam locos ever built. The photo is from the C.W. Jernstrom collection.
