Album Info:Caltrain operates one of the busiest commuter routes on the west coast. With up to a dozen trains an hour, there is lots of action. Added to the mix are trains from Amtrak, Altamont Corridor Express, and Union Pacific. This album includes photos throughout the second half of 2022.

Description:  Caltrain 906 shoves one more northbound out of Diridon as the sun sets in the west. The 1985-vintage F40 is in charge of train #269 northbound, a weekend service to San Francisco. Leaving at 8:12 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, the train wont reach San Fran until nearly 10 PM, where the equipment will likely spend the night.

Title:  UP Geeps Head North With A Local
Description:  With the sun setting below the horizon, we left Diridon to head south. As things can be sometimes, the action picked up as soon as we left the building. With the Caltrain clear, Union Pacific sends a local through the station at dusk. Darting back to the station from the parking lot, I barely caught the train as it rumbled through, albeit at an egregiously low shutter speed. GP40M-2 1466 leads the train along with GP60 1017, 1466 was originally built in 1966 for Seaboard Air Line, a railroad that ran from Virginia south to Florida. The unit lasted in service through the Seaboard Coast Line and CSX mergers, eventually being sold off to Cotton Belt in the late 1980s.

Description:  Running nearly an hour late, the northbound Coast Starlight flies through south San Jose approaching its next stop. The train is making around 76 MPH as it flies along Monterey Road, south of the Capitol Caltrain Station. The train is led by P42DCs 159 and 203, the latter of which wears a commemorative Operation Livesaver livery.

Title:  Twilight Outbound
Description:  As the sun sets, Caltrain 906 growls out of San Jose Diridon with another load of northbound commuters. The aging F40 has been serving the peninsula for nearly 40 years, having entered service in 1985. After 37 years of constant use, age is beginning to catch up to the old beasts. As evidenced by the catenary wires that have sprung up along the peninsula, the F40s are facing their final days, as the first of 19 7-car EMU sets begin to arrive. 906 will have two years at best before it will inevitably be retired. It is unknown if any of Caltrains 23 F40 models will be preserved.

Description:  Caltrans 2010 leads a southbound Capitol Corridor train into San Jose Diridon. The F59PHI is in charge of train #727, a weekend southbound service between Sacramento and San Jose. Its arrival in San Jose coincides with the departure of its northbound counterpart, train #727 northbound. Both trains can be seen just past 10:00 AM, provided both are running on time.

Description:  Two Genesis diesels lead the southbound Coast Starlight into town. Amtrak 189 and 77 are the power for todays train, which is running right on time as it glides into the station. 189 was built in 2001 by General Electric, and was formerly painted in a livery that promoted the Red River Rivalry, a college football rivalry between the University of Oklahoma and University of Texas. Amtrak has provided expanded service for game attendees, a service known as "The Big Game Train."

Title:  F40PH-2 Leads #224 Southbound
Description:  Caltrain 907 leads a southbound into track 6 at San Jose Diridon. 907 is one of 5 Caltrain F40PH-2s that was never rebuilt with a separate HEP generator. Instead these 5 had the HEP system directly connected to the engine system. These "stock" units can be distinguished from the rebuilt examples by the presence of a rear walkway at the end of the carbody and a distinct growl when stopped. This is caused by the engine running at a continuous higher RPM when the HEP system is running, even when the locomotive is idling at stations. 907 was built in 1985 by EMD.
