Here is page two of an 18-page article entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad In Altoona: 1849-1949." It was published originally in the "Altoona Centennial Booklet" dated August of 1949, page 15. "The building of the Erie Canal . . . had been ineffectually met by Pennsylvania in the building of a system of railroads, canals, and inclined planes known as the Main Line of Public Works, which was State owned and State operated. This system of communication between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh never proved satisfactory, in that it was not only costly and slow, but service had to be discontinued much of the time due to floods in spring and ice in winter."

Here is page one of an 18-page article entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad In Altoona: 1849-1949." It was published originally in the "Altoona Centennial Booklet" dated August of 1949, page 14. Photo Caption: "The Altoona Shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad and a part of Altoona. Time about 1853." Partially visible here is the PRR's Altoona Machine Shops complex. From 1850 until the completion of the Horseshoe Curve in 1854, the PRR's mainline was different than its current form: the tracks paralleled 9th Avenue out of Altoona to Duncansville and the interchange with the Allegheny Portage Railroad ~ instead of curving right at 9th Street, paralleling 10th Avenue past ALTO and SLOPE Towers, then climbing the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. As such, the mainline tracks and the Passenger Station are actually on the other side of the two-story Master Mechanic's Building and the long shop structure depicted here. Brush Mountain dominates the distance.

Passing over all seven tracks is the 12th Street Footbridge. In the foreground is PRR engine #452, a Class D (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1869, rebuilt in Juniata as a Class Da, then sold to the PC&StL and renumbered "57" in 1881.

Here is page six of an 18-page article entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad In Altoona: 1849-1949." It was published originally in the "Altoona Centennial Booklet" dated August of 1949, page 19. "The first railroad station in Altoona was a small frame structure on Ninth Avenue at Twelfth Street. Here, the railroad traffic into Altoona and what little passed on to Hollidaysburg and the Portage Railroad was handled until February 15, 1854, when a new two-story brick structure, erected at Tenth Avenue and Thirteenth Street, was opened for business over the newly completed main line via Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin. In 1887 the present station building, affording larger quarters, was erected on the same site."

The Logan House was consructed during 1853 and demolished in 1931, but the bridge survived until 1965!
